The Water Reclamation Maintenance Tech at Mustang Special Utility District is responsible for skilled tasks in constructing, maintaining, and repairing the wastewater infrastructure. This role involves operating heavy equipment, such as skid steers, concrete saw cutters, and service trucks, to ensure the integrity and functionality of utility sewer lines. The Operator performs tasks including installing and repairing sewer laterals, sewer mains, manholes, sidewalks, and driveways, often working in various weather conditions. This position is crucial for maintaining the district’s wastewater infrastructure, ensuring efficient operation, and providing reliable wastewater services.

Essential Functions:

  • System Maintenance and Repairs: Perform assigned work orders and directed tasks from the Crew Lead, including the installation and repair of leaks, breaks, manholes, sidewalks, and valve stacks. Conduct concrete removal and repouring tasks to ensure structural integrity.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment, such as service trucks, dump trucks, skid steers, and excavators. Perform necessary maintenance and report needed repairs on this equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Safety and Confined Space Work: Perform work in confined spaces, taking necessary precautions such as using air quality monitors and ventilators. Follow safety protocols to ensure the safety of the crew and the public.
  • Emergency and Standby Services: Serve in an emergency standby capacity, providing customer service and performing maintenance and repairs to our infrastructure during regular work hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • Traffic Control and Public Safety: Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices, signs, and barricades to ensure the safety of the public and work crew during maintenance operations.
  • Inspection and Problem Identification: Locate and identify major problems with pipes, such as cracks, holes, and collapses, using magnetic line locators and other tools. Assist contractors and other utility companies in the field.
  • Customer Service: Communicate effectively with co-workers, customers, and the public, responding to inquiries and addressing issues related to sewer maintenance work. Provide courteous customer service in various conditions.
  • Physical and Environmental Work: Work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders, and traveling across rough surfaces at excavation sites.

Qualifications


Education:

  • Required: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience:

  • Required: Minimum of one year of general maintenance and construction experience.
  • Class I Wastewater Collections License or the ability of obtain one within 6 months of employment.
  • Familiarity with TCEQ 217 Rules and Regulations, and compliance reporting.

Preferred:

  • Additional 2 years of experience in wastewater collection operations.
  • Class II Wastewater Collection License

Certifications:

  • Must have a valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license prior to employment and obtain a Class-A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Thorough understanding of TCEQ 217 Rules and Regulations, and environmental standards related to wastewater collections.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficiency in operating and maintaining wastewater collection system, heavy equipment, and SCADA systems.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data from various monitoring devices to ensure compliance and operational efficiency.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with regulatory agencies, customers, and internal teams. Ability to prepare detailed reports and documentation.
  • Leadership: Effective leadership skills to manage, mentor, and evaluate plant personnel. Ability to foster a positive work environment and promote professional development.
  • Problem-Solving: Effective problem-solving abilities to address operational challenges promptly and develop practical solutions.
  • Customer Service: Excellent customer service skills to address inquiries and resolve complaints professionally.
  • Physical Stamina: Capability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting up to 100 pounds, climbing ladders, and working in various weather conditions. Adherence to safety protocols.
  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational abilities to manage compliance schedules, track regulatory deadlines, and maintain detailed records.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy in compliance documentation, maintenance records, and operational procedures.

Training/Professional Development Requirements:

  • Licensing: Obtain and maintain relevant certifications within the specified timeframe, such as Class I Wastewater Collection License and upgrading with experience.
  • Continuous Learning: Participate in ongoing training programs to stay current with industry best practices and regulatory changes. Engage in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.

Environment/Working Conditions:

  • Indoor and Outdoor Work:  Works outdoors. Requires adaptability to various environmental conditions.
  • Fieldwork: Regularly works on sewer main repairs/manholes involving physical activity such as walking, climbing, and handling equipment.
  • Safety Gear: Consistently wears protective gear such as safety shoes, safety vests, gloves, and hard hats to ensure safety during fieldwork.
  • Flexible Hours: May need to work outside regular office hours to meet regulatory deadlines or respond to emergencies, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends.

Conditions Of Employment:

  • Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License before employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license within 30 days of hire per state law).
  • Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check.
