What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Golf Professional position at Naperville Park District?

  • The Naperville Park District is seeking a Head Golf Professional for our Naperbrook Golf Course. Naperbrook Golf Course is a challenging link-style golf course with round totals annually over 40,000 and is one of two 18-hole courses owned and operated by the Naperville Park District. In addition to the golf course, Naperbrook's facilities include a large practice area with a driving range, practice green and short game practice area, as well as a clubhouse that includes a golf shop that offers a variety of merchandising. Golf Professionals teach a wide range of lesson programs at Naperbrook through the Naperville Park District, along with opportunities to teach private lessons.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage golf shop, driving range, and food/beverage staff and operations, and coordinate golf course facility rentals.
  • Provide expert advice regarding golf equipment, products, and lessons.
  • Maintain all files regarding golf course programs, equipment, and facilities.
  • Maintain and analyze program participation and operational records detailing attendance, waitlists, demographics, trends, and other metrics.
  • Prepare and submit reports and forms regarding golf programs, equipment, facilities, and personnel.
  • Develop, analyze, and maintain a diverse offering of golf course programs.
  • Oversee all golf merchandising, including purchasing, pricing, inventory management, and marketing.
  • Schedule use of outdoor and indoor facilities, personnel, and equipment.
  • Develop annual department/division budget and yearend projections as outlined in the annual budget calendar. Communicate budgetary requests as needed and educate direct reports on the approved annual budget. Continuously monitor budget performance throughout the year, adjusting for unexpected expenses or fluctuations in revenue as appropriate. Approve expenditures.
  • Optimize traditional and alternative revenue sources available for programming objectives.
  • Manage work of others, including planning, assigning, scheduling, and reviewing work, ensuring quality standards. Is responsible for hiring, disciplining, training, and developing, reviewing performance, and administering performance improvement plans for staff. Approve and sign off on biweekly payroll.

Other Duties And Responsibilities

  • Teach private lessons and assist as necessary with the instruction of adult and junior programs and academies, and the supervision of junior leagues.
  • Mediate conflicts between patrons.
  • Participate and speak to local community groups, organizations, and schools regarding golf services and the golf course facility. Build a positive rapport between the district and the community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles, theory, and philosophy of a golf services profession including knowledge of the development and operation of golf courses and facilities.
  • Knowledge of the food and hospitality business.
  • Knowledge and skill in budget preparation, financial management, and fiscal control.
  • Working knowledge of a variety of computer software, including point of sale systems, golf tournament management software, and Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of specification preparation and bidding procedures.

Education And Experience

  • Associate's degree in business, Recreation and Park Administration, Golf Course Management, or related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in golf instruction, facility operation, and event management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must be a PGA Member class "A" status.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, Basset and Food Sanitation certification within four (4) months of hire.

Special Considerations

  • Subject to both office and outside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to modified/flexible work schedules.
  • Ability to travel to and work at all Naperville Park District facilities.
  • Regular onsite attendance is an essential function of this position.
