POSITION TITLE: EC HOMEBOUND TEACHER
The Homebound Special Education Teacher is responsible for scheduling, organizing, and delivering educational programs to students with special needs through a virtual platform, or non-traditional settings, such as the student's home, a hospital, or other facility. The teacher ensures continuity of education and helps students meet the goals outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP). This is often an itinerant position requiring travel.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional planning and delivery:
- Implement instructional lesson plans that align with the student's classroom curriculum and IEP goals.
- Adapt teaching materials and methods to accommodate the student's specific health needs, learning styles, and abilities.
- Create a positive and engaging learning experience, often in a one-on-one setting
Assessment and reporting:
- Regularly monitor and assess the student's academic progress using both formal and informal methods.
- Provide feedback and progress reports to the student's parents and school staff.
- Maintain accurate and efficient records of attendance, instruction hours, and student performance
Communication and collaboration:
- Serve as the main liaison between the student, family, school administration, and classroom teachers.
- Collaborate with school staff to coordinate assignments and ensure smooth student transitions back to the classroom setting.
- Participate in IEP or Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee meetings when required.
- Communicate regularly with parents or guardians to discuss student needs, progress, and goals.
Behavioral support:
- Address emotional or behavioral challenges that may arise during instruction in the home environment.
- Apply a variety of behavioral interventions and strategies to support the student's development.
General requirements:
- Maintain a flexible and dependable schedule to accommodate the student's medical needs.
- Follow all district policies, state and federal regulations, and confidentiality requirements.
- Transport instructional materials to and from the student's home.
Required qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field.
- Valid state teaching certification in Special Education or the appropriate area.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Patience, flexibility, compassion, and adaptability to meet diverse student needs.
- Ability to work independently and manage a flexible schedule
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are often necessary for traveling to student homes.
