What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead/Staff Bioinformatics Scientist position at Natera?
POSITION LOCATION:
Position is available as a hybrid position in San Carlos, Bay Area, California as well as a remote position (within US).
POSITION SUMMARY:
Natera is currently seeking a Lead/Staff Bioinformatics Scientist to join our Bioinformatics Research Team focused on Epigenomics in Oncology. Natera’s mission is to change the management of disease worldwide by using information gained from a simple blood draw to detect disease early and proactively inform treatment. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in algorithm development, genomics, sequencing data processing, and/or applied machine learning. The individual will serve as a technical lead for various algorithm and machine learning model development projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, implement, and validate innovative algorithms and statistical methods to analyze large-scale data sets related to cancer detection
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and scientific excellence
- Work closely with molecular biologists and clinical scientists to solve challenging problems
- Contribute to experimental design and ensure data integrity and quality control
- Act as technical lead during various phases of research and product development
- Mentor and train other bioinformatics scientists
QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Statistics, or related field with a strong focus on cancer epi/genomics
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Minimum of 6-10 years of experience working in the bioinformatics field, including algorithm development, data analysis, and machine learning
- Deep understanding of sequencing data
- Familiar with public databases such as TCGA, COSMIC, or OncoKB
- Experience in Python
- Experience using Linux command-line tools and writing shell scripts
- Ability to visualize findings and summarize results in oral and written form for both technical and non-technical audiences
- High scientific rigor and eager to teach and learn about new computational methods and biology
