Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Lead Engineer, Digital Products will act as lead in Audubon’s efforts to develop and maintain our digital products on the web and other platforms, with specialization in mapping and data visualizations including our Bird Migration Explorer and Christmas Bird Count applications. The role will work collaboratively with Audubon’s digital products, science, and data teams to build immersive and interactive user experiences that leverage bird information, scientific data, and geospatial data to support strategic (“Flight Plan”) initiatives and captivate audiences immersed in the world of birds.

This role can either be hybrid based out of our New York, NY or Washington, DC offices or remote within the United States.

Compensation:

Salary range based on geo-differentials:

  • $120,000-$135,000/year = National

  • $135,000-$150,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY

  • $150,000-$165,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle

Essential Functions

  • Partner with Audubon product managers, product designers, cartographers, creative team, scientists, and geospatial data specialists to build digital products that engage communities of bird lovers across the hemisphere.

  • Develop applications, with a focus on responsive mapping and data visualization features.

  • Oversee the upkeep, maintenance, and feature iteration of the Bird Migration Explorer, Audubon’s groundbreaking migratory data visualization tool.

  • Solve complex interface challenges with clean, performant code that translates complex and often nuanced scientific concepts into visualizations and maps that are suitable for Audubon’s broad audience of bird-lovers.

  • Write and maintain documentation for existing apps and visualizations.

  • Create functional specifications for planned work, including specs for needed tabular and geospatial data services.

  • Troubleshoot issues, fix bugs, and make iterative improvements to applications and features once shipped.

  • Stay engaged with the cutting edge of mapping, GIS, and data visualization frameworks, and apply new techniques and explorations into Audubon’s work.

  • Partner with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work. 

  • Other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 7 years of experience as a product engineer, or in similar roles, with increasing levels of responsibility.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered.

  • 4 years’ experience developing responsive front-end applications with a focus on mapping and data visualization.

  • Proficiency in the tools of modern web application development—HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and at least one modern JavaScript framework, preferably React.

  • Familiarity with common geospatial data formats and mapping toolkits: GeoJSON, Shapefiles, ArcGIS (and the ArcGIS SDK for JavaScript), Leaflet, Mapbox, etc. Esri ArcGIS experience is a huge plus.

  • Strong understanding and demonstrated work in optimizing complex web applications for performance across browsers and devices.

  • High degree of self-organization, and the ability to define efficient workflows and processes needed to work independently outside of an existing engineering team structure.

  • Great communication skills, especially the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
