Term Starts September 2024- August 2025
AmeriCorps members will receive a stipend of $2066.66 month and are eligible to receive a post-service education award upon successful completion of service of $7,395; student loan forbearance and interest payments, if the member qualifies; health care and child care are available for eligible members; and professional development opportunities are available. AmeriCorps members will receive CPR and First Aid training and 10 days for personal time off.
Position Summary: Outdoor Educator will deliver and assist with planning and coordination of all of the educational programs of Nevada Outdoor School including Nature in My World, Nature Explorers, summer camps, special events, and assist with field trip implementation. Support community focus programs such as community hikes, Nature Programs; Outreach events; Road shows, Nature Clubs. Will also provide input into the development of kindergarten through 6th grade lesson plans. This position will have access to vulnerable populations.
Primary Responsibilities: Support the delivery of monthly or quarterly lessons for formal education classrooms on a variety of nature-based topics linked to science, social studies, literature, and mathematics. Deliver content for Field Trips, Develop and facilitate NOS Nature Clubs. Plan and deliver Summer Camps for 8 - 17 years old and adults. Plan and lead community hikes. Plan and lead nature programs and facilitate weekend volunteer stewardship projects with partners. Develop and facilitate NOS Nature Clubs and Kid Zone. Gather/obtain and keep tidy all necessary educational supplies. Programs delivery occurs in six rural Nevada counties, Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Pershing and White Pine. Overnight travel is required at times, but always prearranged.
Related Responsibilities: Enter participant numbers into database and help to compile monthly direct results reporting, assist with development and utilize assessment tools and/or evaluations, promote Nevada Outdoor School's educational program through various forms of media - via media, assist in recruiting volunteers for educational programs as required, assist in recruiting youth for elective programs, attend special events. Will attend trainings, seminars/conference related to service objectives and career development.
Qualifications: Basic computer skills (Google Suite), Flexibility in work schedule to allow for travel to programming locations and training opportunities, self-motivated and flexibility in working in a multi-task environment, ability to communicate (orally and in writing) and work with a diverse population, experience working with children and/or the public, ability to work as an effective team member as well as ability to work independently, ability to work on a team, current Driver's license required with good driving record, ability to communicate and work with a diverse population, experience working with children, enjoy the outdoors. Familiarity/comfortable driving full-size trucks and vans. Able to hike 3 miles per day with a 20 lb pack and complete fitness tests and provide a doctor's medical release.
Required Academic: GED/high school diploma. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent, or agree to earn a high school diploma or equivalent before using an educational award.
Term of Service and Time Requirements: Full-time 1700 hours term.
Service environment description: Service members will be preparing lessons in an office setting and driving NOS trucks to school sites in Humboldt and Elko counties. Field trips and summer camps will be conducted outdoors and may be subject to sudden changes in weather. The functions of this position may be completed with or without reasonable accommodations. AmeriCorps members are expected to wear AmeriCorps gear while serving, to include provided shirts or buttons. Dress is business casual. AmeriCorps members participate in 1 National Service event during the year and additionally, are expected to participate in regular team meetings held in Winnemucca. The member may participate via teleconferencing.; must disclose all criminal convictions during the application process; undergo a National Service Criminal History Check and for it not to report any statutory exclusionary offenses to AmeriCorps service; must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States; and must be at least 17 years of age at the commencement of service.
