What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at New Canaan Community YMCA, Inc.?
GENERAL FUNCTION
Works under the direction of the Director of Pool Operations. Lifeguards will conduct patron surveillance and act swiftly and professionally in emergency situations.
KNOW-HOW
- Possess current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate or equivalent.
- Swim continuously for 300 yards.
- Perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for water rescue.
- Perform resuscitation, all rescues, and survival skills.
- Communicate with others effectively.
- Act swiftly in an emergency.
- Have the following characteristics: reliable, mature, courteous, consistent, positive, honest, respectful, responsible, caring, and professional.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
- Work 3 permanent shifts a week and work 2-weekend shifts a month.
- Ensure member safety and protect lives, including your own life.
- Be in uniform on deck during shift (includes guard shirt, shorts, rescue tube, walkie-talkie, whistle, and hip pack).
- Actively conduct surveillance of the pools and the members in the pools.
- Initiate the emergency action plan when an emergency occurs and provide care for victims as trained.
- Enforce all pool rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Be timely for scheduled shifts.
- Report all accidents/incidents to the director of pool operations.
- Attend staff meetings and engage in staff training.
- Maintain and keep all certifications current.
- Perform other duties as designated by supervisor.
- Job description may be changed at any time by the supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the job duties, the employee is frequently required to: climb, kneel, reach, push, swim, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, navigate stairs, stoop, crawl, walk, lift, talk, hear, and sit. The employee may occasionally need to exercise these physical labor demands: exert 60-100 pounds of force occasionally and 20-40 pounds of force frequently. Acute hearing is essential to this position. In this position, this person may occasionally be required to work in outside weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, this individual may occasionally be exposed to wet and humid environments and moderate noise.
