GENERAL FUNCTION
NEW CANAAN COMMUNITY YMCA
Job Description
Under the direction of the Director of Healthy Living, the Personal Trainer will be part of the support staff that is responsible for meeting the needs of those members requesting one-on-one training.
KNOW-HOW
- Must have good human relations skills to facilitate positive relationships with clients, members, and staff.
- Must hold and maintain for the duration of YMCA’s employment: ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NASM, or equivalent certification (determination of the validity of a certification at the discretion of the Director of Healthy Living).
- Must be certified in CPR/AED/ Standard First Aid and maintain that certification for the duration of employment.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
- Maintain a professional attitude at all times during your employment at the New Canaan YMCA.
- Be responsible for increasing and developing your own client base by being proactive and visible to the YMCA membership. This may include the following: sign up for wellness center hours, speak positively about and promote the YMCA personal training program to your clients and others.
- Review and discuss with the client all pertinent medical and exercise history forms, clearance forms, goals, and fitness evaluation results prior to your first session with a client.
- Arrive on time and ready for your client appointments. End the one-hour sessions on time.
- Wear your staff shirt and pin, appropriate workout pants or shorts, and sneakers while working with a client.
- Punch “in “and “out “accurately.
- Collect receipts of payment from each client and keep accurate attendance records (never accept direct payment for sessions all money transactions should take place at the front desk.)
- Demonstrate understanding towards the individual needs of each client.
- Develop trust with your clients through being reliable, acting professionally and responsibly.
- Notify supervisor of any problems that arise.
- Keep open lines of communication at all times with your clients and with your supervisor (this includes returning client phone calls in reasonable time and keeping your supervisor up to date with client progress).
- All information regarding your client should be kept confidential. Anything that goes on in a session or related to a session should be kept between the client, their trainer, and when necessary your supervisor.
- Cooperate with fellow personal trainers in an effort to build a team atmosphere. This includes discussing any issues that may come up between trainers with your supervisor and not with your clients or other members.
- Aid your supervisor when needed, in performing fitness evaluations (if properly certified) and goal setting appointments.
- Give a minimum of two weeks notice to terminate employment.
- Wage is a private matter. Maintain a professional attitude and do not discuss with peers.
- Attend a minimum 2 of the staff meetings. Make arrangements with your supervisor to review any material you may have missed from an unattended staff meeting.
- Perform other duties as designated by your supervisor.
- Job Description may be changed at any time by your supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be frequently required to reach, push, stand, kneel, stoop, perform repetitive motions, pull, grasp, walk, lift, talk, hear, sit, and navigate stairs.
- The incumbent may also be regularly performing exercises that require a high level of exertion and lift and/or move 60- 100 pounds or greater occasionally and 20-50 pounds or greater frequently while performing their job functions.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close/far vision, field of vision, and peripheral vision.
- Acute hearing is essential to this position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- In this position, this person will not be frequently required to work in outside weather conditions.
- While performing the duties of this job, this individual may occasionally be exposed to moderate noise from music.
EFFECT ON END RESULT

They will positively promote themselves by providing their assistance, encouragement, and knowledge whenever needed.
