What are the responsibilities and job description for the Direct Support Professional position at New Danville?
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) has responsibility for providing daily instruction, training, and supervision, to deliver quality services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and those needing similar services.
The Direct Support Professional may conduct training in a variety of areas, including, but not limited to, sewing, art, life-skills, woodworking, gardening, animal care, and culinary. Priority will be placed on matching the DSP to their area of expertise and/or skills.
The focus of the duties will depend on the specific training program and will require hands-on teaching, demonstration, group activities, and field trips as appropriate. Community engagement and interactions are highly stressed as appropriate and available.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides instruction as scheduled for day program activities to focus on helping to develop self-help, social, fine arts, recreation/leisure, communications, interpersonal relationships, and community skills, based on the health and safety, personal needs and preferences of the individuals served.
- Provides the appropriate levels of supervision for physical, emotional, and behavioral support to achieve goal objectives.
- Oversees activities to ensure materials are current, age-appropriate, and useful, and current by reviewing activity ideas with the assigned supervisor.
- Creatively modifies materials and/or environment to allow individuals with varying abilities the opportunity to actively participate in program activities.
- Prepares weekly summary narrative for each HCS client indicating performance on goal objectives, community field trips, and/or behavioral situations
- Actively pursues and seizes opportunities for individuals to participate in community functions and opportunities for service learning to enhance the self-actualization of the individuals served.
- Continually enhances programs to include preferences of the individuals served, opportunities for creative expression, and opportunities for social skill development.
- Other duties as assigned or specified by policy and procedure.

- Bi-Lingual a plus but not required
Qualifications required
- High-school diploma or higher and preferably at least one year of work-related and/or teaching experience.
- Strong desire and ability to work with individuals with developmental disabilities or a related field such as recreation, education, or therapy.
- Must be caring, patient, and dependable.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with appropriate discretion in handling confidential information.
- Ability to work effectively with supervision to plan and establish priorities in light of multiple demands.
- Clean driving record and ability to drive passenger vans, and small buses (CDL is not required)
- No conviction of criminal offenses as listed under §250.006 of the Texas Health and Safety Code.
- No designation of abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation of a resident or consumer of a facility or misappropriated a resident’s or consumer’s property in the Employee Misconduct Registry and the Nurse Aid Registry maintained by the Texas Department of Human Services.
- Preferred minimum age of 25.
