What are the responsibilities and job description for the Housing Specialist position at New Hope Transitional Housing?
The Housing Specialist plays a pivotal role in ensuring that clients obtain permanent housing within acceptable timeframes. The Housing Specialist will also be responsible for conducting a housing assessment to determine the client’s housing readiness, family composition and other housing needs. S/he will assist clients in the completion of applications for housing and rental subsidy programs and conduct housing counseling. S/he will escort clients to subsidized housing, realtors, landlord, and community-based agencies. S/he will accompany clients to apartment visits and lease signings. S/he will establish linkages with real estate brokers and landlords, and will maintain detailed participant notes and update database.
Duties:
- Address the underlying issues of homelessness by identifying barriers and finding reasonable solutions.
- Develop a housing plan and coordinate a move based on the client’s transition plan from the shelter to affordable, permanent housing within the desired time frame.
- Develop and facilitate housing readiness workshops including mock interviews.
- Function as a housing resource for clients and Social Service staff by maintaining updated listings.
- Meet with clients regularly to ensure housing readiness.
- Ensure case files are updated regarding housing by accurately documenting housing search efforts and verify housing rejections.
- Maintaining required housing records in CARES.
- Accompany clients to housing appointments, as necessary.
- Serve as a liaison between DHS, Section 8, NYCHA, and Social Service staff to ensure that all necessary documentation is obtained.
- Identify entitlements and assist clients with benefit and housing applications.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Director or designee.
- Responsible for completion and submission of housing packages.
