JOB TITLE: Safety and Risk Manager

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Safety & Risk Manager position requires extensive knowledge, skill, and insight across the spectrum of construction risk. This position will lead the organization towards comprehensively redesigning the entire risk and safety management strategy. Review and assess on-going program implementation, make recommendations to Executive Leadership for enhancements and determine new program development initiatives to measurably improve outcomes. Take action to ensure compliance with deferral and state health, safety, and environmental regulations. Advise and consult with field supervision and management on all necessary precautions, bidding/contracts concerns, preconstruction considerations, work methods, equipment use, subcontractor risk and practices including environmental hazards and precautions. Cultural and Collaborative personality traits that exhibit good working relationships with operations are vital.

Responsibilities: Below are the essential duties and responsibilities of the position; other duties may be assigned as directed:

1) Develops and implements a comprehensive Safety and Risk strategy to measurably improve outcomes.

2) Recommends necessary changes and leads change to all policies and programs to achieve desired outcomes.

3) Establish performance metrics to improve outcomes, perform tracking and reporting to management.

4) Evaluates and regularly monitors project, supervisor and crew performance to provide coaching on specific performance improvement areas; recommends disciplinary action to HR when necessary.

5) Manages environmental compliance by researching required pollution guidelines, forecasting prevention needs, and reporting pollution plans.

6) Provides leadership and support to the Corporate Steering Committee, corporate and field personnel in monitoring the effectiveness of processes and programs implemented, including but not limited to accident investigations, safety best practices and audits, and DOT matters.

7) Assess exposure to safety and risk and adverse consequences of construction activities. Collaborate with others when negotiating policy terms and limits. Recommends the purchase of insurance, coverage limits and deductibles to ensure adequate protection against loss at the most effective cost to the Company.

8) Collaborates with upper management and insurance broker to manage outcomes in workers compensation, liability, auto, and property & casualty claims. Manages and oversees the administration of the workers’ compensation program, including claims and claim costs, claim reviews, and return to work program for the benefit of the employee and the company.

9) Participates in client meetings as requested to promote the corporate Safety & Risk Management programs.

  • Develop tracking and communication methods for leadership team
  • Develop inspection protocols to measure expectations versus execution
  • Policy & procedure development: compliance, client-specific, job/task-specific, site-specific
  • Regulatory/Compliance OSHA, DOT, EPA, FRA, MSHA, PHMSA, PSC/PUC, etc.
  • Training & qualification develop/deliver training programs, provide knowledge/skill assessments
  • Administrative/Clerical: documentation, recordkeeping, internal/external reporting
  • Field implementation and execution of all necessary precautions for managing risk and safety
  • Subcontractor Management: define expectation, evaluate performance, guidance/correction, training, and feedback
  • Accident/incident investigation and analysis, reporting, documentation, incident breakdown, root causes, corrective actions, follow-up and feedback
  • Claim Management: reporting/managing/closing-out all auto, work comp, general liability claims

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, a candidate would have the following:

  • Candidates with a 4-year degree in risk/safety/health or construction-related degree are preferred but actual risk/safety management experience is essential.
  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional), ASP (Associate Safety Professional), SMS (Safety Management Specialist), or CHST (Construction Health & Safety Technician) designation.
  • Comprehensive occupational safety and health program management, construction equipment use and necessary precautions, managing fleet/DOT risk and compliance, claims response and management (WC, GL, Auto), Subcontractor management, developing meaningful risk/safety tracking and measurements.
  • Knowledge of, ability to, work with and manage all compliance functions (federal, state, county and municipal agencies) that directly impact operations.
  • Possess a well-developed skill/ability to effectively communicate expectations in writing (written programs, policy development, training programs, emails all other risk/ safety written methods).

Compensation: Base salary to be determined; commensurate with the skill and experience level of the candidate. Access to full benefits including 401k, medical, dental and vision insurance.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $65,822.00 - $184,225.00 per year
