POSITION OVERVIEW

The Teaching Artist works with the Senior Associate Director of Education and Assistant Education Specialist to develop and implement youth tours, community tours, and partnership programs. Inquiry and discussion-based tours engage school, youth, and adult audiences in close observation and critical thinking, while offering context and insights into New Museum exhibitions. Partnerships are intensive relationships between the Museum and local New York City public schools and non-profit organizations. They involve curriculum development and multi-visit museum and classroom visit programs. The Teaching Artist researches and writes tours and hands-on lesson plans, and implements them with groups in the Museum, at partner sites, and online.

This is a part-time, on-call position that may include occasional weekends. This position is a union-represented position subject to terms of the Museum’s agreement with Local 2110, UAW, and, because the position is less than 20 hours per week, is not eligible for the New Museum’s employee benefits programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

• Develop and facilitate inquiry- and activity-based educational programs, including interactive tours and classroom visits (online and in-person) related to New Museum exhibitions, designed for youth and adult audiences
• Collaborate with teachers to integrate activities with their students’ interests and curriculum
• Participate in seasonal New Museum professional development workshops for teachers and youth programs, as needed
• Prepare digital and analog materials for activities
• Attend training sessions and periodic meetings
• Develop a strong understanding of critical ideas and art within New Museum exhibitions
• Write post-visit reflections and conduct evaluations of each partnership, along with end-of-season program assessments with the Senior Associate Director of Education
• Communicate museum visitation protocols and what to expect to students and teachers, such as not touching art work, as well as why these guidelines are in place

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum five years of teaching experience, with minimum three years of experience teaching with contemporary art
• BA in Art History, Art Education, or related field or BFA required; MA or MFA, or significant equivalent experience, is preferred
• Exemplary oral and written communication skills
• Advanced knowledge of and engagement with contemporary art and relevant learning theories, acquired through study and practice
• Demonstrated commitment to and passion for collaborating with others to co-create learning opportunities that advance EPE’s mission, values, and methods
• Demonstrated success in generating and maintaining mutually respectful communication and attentive engagement with groups of diverse ages, backgrounds, experiences, and identities. Previous experience and enthusiasm for working with LGBTQIA youth preferred.
• Demonstrated facility with online learning platforms and comfort leading activities both online and in person
• Knowledge of Common Core Standards and arts integration is a plus
