Job Summary
The Custodian will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall upkeep of all buildings on campus. This position ensures a clean, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff, and visitors by performing a variety of custodial duties, including cleaning restrooms, classrooms, offices and common areas.
The Custodian position is a classified, hourly and essential personnel position. As an essential personnel position, to maintain safe operations of campuses, the individuals in this position are required to work during inclement weather.
Nature of Work
The Custodian is responsible for cleaning, maintaining and assisting with repairs to grounds, fixtures, facilities and buildings on the campus. This position may require travel between campuses to complete similar duties on New River campuses/sites.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Performs other functions as required or assigned. Also complies with all Policies and Standards.
- Cleaning and Sanitizing:
Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, toilets, and mirrors.
Refill supplies, such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper
Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust classrooms, hallways, offices and stairwells.
- Trash and Recycling:
Empty trash and recycling bins and dispose of waste properly.
Replace liners in trash cans as needed
- Floor Care:
Perform regular floor maintenance, including sweeping, mopping, and buffing floors.
Use floor care equipment such as auto scrubbers and floor buffers when necessary.
- Window and Surface Cleaning
Clean windows, glass doors, and other surfaces
Remove smudges, fingerprints, and dust
- General Maintenance Support
Report any maintenance or repair needs, such as leaking faucets, damaged fixtures, or broken equipment, to the Facilities Supervisor.
Assist in moving furniture and setting up spaces for events, as required
Responsible for closing/locking facilities
- Safety and Compliance
Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including proper storage and use of cleaning supplies.
Promptly address any spills, hazards, or safety concerns.
- Other duties as Assigned
Perform additional cleaning tasks or special projects as directed by the Facilities Supervisor.
Professional Development
- Compliance training is to be completed routinely and timely.
- Participate in additional professional development opportunities through LinkedIn Learning and professional organization affiliations.
Qualifications

Skills/Abilities
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders
- Comfortable working in various environments, including restrooms, stairwells, and outdoor areas.
Education
High School Diploma/GED - Required
Previous custodial or janitorial experience - Preferred
