Position Summary:
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: Mow, trim, clean, repair, renovate, and install lawns. Weed, edge, mulch, and groom planting beds and tree rings. Plant, groom, prune, and cut back perennials. Water plants outdoors and under glass. Assist in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems. Move plant materials. Clean equipment, landscapes, and work areas. Remove snow and ice from landscapes and treat pathways to prevent the buildup of such. Assist in the trimming of trees and hedges. Assist in plant health care applications. Assist in tree care operations. Assist in supervising the work of students, volunteers, and entry-level employees. Inspect equipment, such as utility carts and mowers, and record the results on written reports. Promptly notify supervisors when there are issues of concern. Assist in the maintenance and repair of equipment. Operate equipment in accordance with training. Wear Personal Protective Equipment in accordance with training. Other tasks related to the care of the landscape. Qualifications: At least one year of full-time experience caring for lawns and landscapes. Experience must include the operation of tools and mechanical equipment. As a substitute for six months of full-time employment, a certificate from an accredited school or horticulture program; or a degree in horticulture, agriculture, or a related field from an accredited college. Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license valid in the State of New York. Ability to communicate clearly and understand written and verbal communication. The ability to follow instructions and work productively independently or as part of a team. Physical Demands & Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, work outdoors in all weather conditions in all seasons, stand, sit, crouch, kneel, and walk, operate lifts and other machinery, climb ladders, use hand tools and power equipment, and lift and\or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to perform tasks repetitively. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position. Baseline Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-4:00 PM Must be able to occasionally work on weekends when scheduled. Must be available to work some overtime as needed throughout the year.
