CHILD GUARDIAN

The Public is seeking a thoughtful, communicative, and caring person to serve as a CHILD GUARDIAN in our upcoming productions. 

The ideal candidate will have experience working with children, a strong communicator,

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a liaison between Stage Management (SM) and parents of child. 
  • Assist SM with supervision of child during rehearsal process and maintaining records including blocking. 
  • Maintain well-being and safety of child during rehearsals, tech, performances, and breaks. This includes staying with child until they are picked up and receiving child once dropped off. 
  • Guide child in completing school work or other tasks specified by parents/guardians when not needed onstage. 
  • Attend all rehearsals/performances when child is present. 
  • Coordinate with Stage Management and backstage staff to send/receive child as they enter and exit the stage. 
  • Escort child to/from costume fittings and other calls as well as around the backstage areas as necessary. 
  • Work with the Wardrobe Supervisor to coordinate the preparation, dressing, and quick changes of child. 
  • Assist child with getting into costumes, hair, and make up as necessary. 
  • Teach and ensure child observes proper backstage protocol and etiquette. 
  • Help children and maintain focus/appropriate behavior when not working onstage. 

Guidelines:

  • Discuss expectations desired with Company Management and Stage Management before rehearsals begin. 
  • Get to know the parents and families of the children that you are in charge of. 
  • Do not wear jewelry that dangles or has sharp edges and keep your clothes out of the way. 
  • A single adult and a single child should not be in a closed room alone. 
  • Touching should be initiated by the child. Hugs, handholding, and such should not be given out without initiation from the child. Also, a child’s preference not to be touched should be respected. 
  • Talk to children at eye-level and do not shout when giving instructions. 
  • Know where the first aid kit is in your room and ensure it is out of reach of the child. 
  • Ensure you have a parental form filled out of the child’s allergies, medication, and rules on giving first aid. 
  • Do not work when you are sick. Do not use alcohol, tobacco or other drugs while at work. 
  • Use "do" instead of "don't" whenever possible. Focus on what to do rather than what not to do. 

Skills, Experiences and Qualifications:

  • Proven experience with professional child care

As a condition of employment, the Public will require all employees who report to work on site (either at the Public Theater or any other workspace or performing location) to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and booster. The Public will provide exceptions only for employees with an approved medical or religious exemption.

Compensation:

This role has a rate of $21.00 per hour. 

This position is non-exempt, according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Position is available immediately.
