About Newport Tree Conservancy
Founded in 1987, the Newport Tree Conservancy (NTC) is dedicated to protecting and enhancing Newport’s urban forest. We achieve this by planting and caring for city trees, preserving historically and culturallysignificant tree specimens, and engaging the community through robust educational programming and volunteer opportunities.
NTC works closely with the City of Newport to advance tree canopy equity, ensuring that every neighborhood benefits from the environmental and social value of trees. Our educational programs currently reach more than 500 students across Newport’s public schools and extend through community centers and partner organizations throughout the city.
Position Overview
The Program Coordinator plays a vital leadership role in delivering NTC’s educational mission. This full-time, year-round position is responsible for developing and implementing a wide range of youth and adult programs—including in-school and afterschool lessons, summer outreach, scout badge workshops, garden clubs, tree walks, and arboretum-based public programs.
The Program Coordinator collaborates with NTC’s Horticulture team and Community Engagement Coordinator and reports directly to the Executive Director.
Primary Responsibilities
- Design and lead dynamic, inclusive programs that inspire learners of all ages
- Coordinate program logistics, including scheduling, staffing, and material preparation
- Build and maintain partnerships with schools, educators, community centers, and civic groups
- Evaluate program outcomes and apply findings to strengthen future offerings
- Report on program impact, participant engagement, and educational outcomes
- Manage seasonal public engagement days at NTC’s accredited arboreta
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental education or a related field preferred
- Minimum of 3 years of experience delivering environmental education, preferably with K–12 audiences
- Prior experience coordinating programs or leading teams
- Knowledge of forest ecology, urban forestry, or tree stewardship
- Experience in curriculum development and program evaluation
- Demonstrated ability to engage with diverse communities and learning styles
- Strong written and verbal communication skills across age groups and stakeholders
- Organized, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple priorities independently
- Spanish language proficiency a plus
- Familiarity with climate change education a plus
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and data tracking systems
Additional Expectations
- Must be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Enthusiastic about environmental education, urban nature, and civic engagement
- Available for occasional evening or weekend events
- Willing to support annual fundraisers and other NTC events as needed
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required
- Attend staff meetings and contribute to organizational planning
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Executive Director

Pay: $42,000.00 - $48,000.00 per year
