What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Assistant position at Newport Veterinary Hospital?
We are looking for a long term Veterinary Assistant to care for animals and support Veterinarians. This will be a Full-time position and you can not be in school or planning to attend in the future. You’ll play an important role in bringing comfort to our furry patients and ensuring the smooth running of our facility. We’ll rely on you to assist the Veterinarian in examinations and/or operations. Do you love animals? Then you’re halfway there. You need the ability to care for them properly – that’s one of the most important Vet Assistant job requirements. This includes knowledge of routine tasks, like vaccines, blood work and medications, but also readiness to care for injured or sick animals. If you’re organized, quick on your feet and have the stomach to help with medical operations and euthanasia, we’d like to meet you.
Responsibilities
- Communicate with clients
- Understand different types of appointments
- Draw up vaccines
- Learn to use blood work machines
- Prep rooms for appointments
- Sterilize equipment and clean examination tables and rooms
- Properly restrain animals during examinations or vaccinations
- Administer oral medication prescribed by Veterinarians
- Observe animal behavior or health condition of boarding or sick patients and report to the Vet
- Help in cases of emergencies
- Keep accurate records and logs
- Open invoices and adjust as necessary
- Advise pet owners on nutrition, healthcare & the importance of preventatives
- Be familiar with the products we have available
Skills
- At least 1 year experience as a Veterinary Assistant preferred but not required
- Self Starter and multi-tasker
- Team Player
- Capable handling of pets
- Able to with stand vomiting, diarrhea etc...
- Excellent communication skills
- Patient and caring personality
- Ability to follow instructions properly
- Comfortable being around cats and dogs
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (e.g. lifting pets)
- Availability to occasionally work in emergencies
- Collect blood samples (venipuncture)
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $12.00 per hour
Expected hours: 36 – 41 per week
