JOB SUMMARY
The Educational Learning Specialist
will support students during their pre-clinical education at Noorda-COM. The
Educational Learning Specialist will assist students in achieving their goals
by promoting self-understanding, incorporating effective study strategies, and
overcoming barriers to academic success. The ideal candidate must have a strong
background in medical education and adult learning theory and have a passion
for developing innovative learning solutions that enhance the education and
training of future physicians.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide advisement to students during their preclinical years (OMSI and OMSII) as related to academic success.
- Teach students about academic self-awareness and understanding of individual learning preferences.
- Counsel students in utilizing optimal academic skills to meet the rigors of medical education including study skills, test taking strategies, time management, note taking, strategic learning techniques and more.
- Meet with students who have failed coursework or specific exams to diagnose academic issues and develop individualized strategies and resources for each student.
- Help to identify, support, and refer students who are academically underprepared.
- Refer students to appropriate COM personnel for mental health support, accommodations, etc.
- Maintain confidential advising records following FERPA guidelines, track student progress and performance, record appointment session details and follow-up goals, spreadsheets, tracking documents, and monthly reports.
- Ensure the quality, integrity, and defined standards for student academic success.
- Maintain a current working knowledge of various adult learning theories and student support approaches.
- Development of proactive education, academic support programming, and posting of materials that are beneficial to medical students.
- Assist with the development and implementation of components of the pre-matriculation course and subsequent academic success workshops to include instruction on time management, test taking, critical thinking, memory and concentration, study skills, and learning strategies.
- Work effectively as a team member within Academic Success and build and maintain a collaborative climate within the department.
- Actively engage in the advancement of Academic Success as it relates to Academic Affairs
- Build collaborative partnerships across the COM.
- Serve on various committees and teams within the COM as assigned.
- Attend meetings, contribute to discussions, and share information related to student academic progress when requested.
- Remain knowledgeable of and maintain compliance with all institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the Noorda-COM employee handbook.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Assist the Lead Educational Learning Specialist with all tasks related to pods.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certification
- Master's degree in related field (education, psychology, social work, etc.).
- Experience in a medical school is preferred, but allied health or undergraduate experience will be considered.
- Demonstration of effective and consistent academic learning advising and mentoring of students.
- Demonstrated high-level organizational skills.
- Demonstrated experience with at-risk student populations.
- Prior experience advising students in a healthcare profession.
- Completed coursework related to psychology of learning or learning theory in higher education.
- Education background with knowledge of and experience working with learning disabilities and accommodations.
