What are the responsibilities and job description for the Driller position at Nordic-Calista LLC?
JOB SUMMARY:
The individual has to be very knowledgeable of all aspects of the drilling industry. A driller has to be conscientious, safe and quick thinking under extreme conditions. The position requires the supervision of several employees while at the same time running a multi-million-dollar drilling rig efficiently. Will be required to have a first aid card and Blowout prevention card at the Drilling Supervisor level.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for the operation, training, safety and supervision of rig crew.
- Responsible for maintenance and well condition.
- Advises, consults and communicates with oil company representatives in regard to drilling program, monitoring mud and hole conditions for blowout conditions.
- Advises, consults and communicates with rig supervisor in regard to the condition of the rig and hole.
- Extensively familiar with all operations of the rig and subsurface tools.
- Monitors all rig and subsurface conditions.
- Skilled in certain relative figures that apply in daily rig operations (torque, weight, depth, ton miles etc.
- Performs any other duties that may be assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Responsible for safety of their crew. Driller is expected to understand and accept the Nordic Safety Program and cooperate with management.
- Establishes safe work practices and give job instruction, especially to new workers.
- Supervises workers to ensure they are following the proper job procedures and equipment operating practices (training of crew at different levels).
- Corrects any unsafe condition or acts immediately.
- Reports and investigates with management all incidents/accidents on his shift.
- Ensures that all environmental policies are adhered to in accordance with government policies.
- Responsible to ensure any worker who appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol or appears to be hung over is not transported to the worksite. The Driller shall inform the Rig Manager who will arrange for a replacement worker.
- Ensures Nordic HSET/HSE policies are reviewed and practiced by all rig personnel.
- Ensures Nordic’s annual environmental goals are distributed and reviewed by rig personnel.
- Assists Rig Manager in identifying non-conformances between Nordic operations and environmental requirements, including regulatory requirements, permit requirements, and contract requirements.
- Develops and implements standard operating procedures to ensure sustained environmental compliance.
- Maintains waste management tracking system and hazardous waste determinations.
- Assists Rig Manager in obtaining an annual waste inventory.
- Trains rig personnel in practicing Nordic policies, procedures, and waste management tracking system so all responsibilities and duties are clearly understood.
- Notifies Rig Manager of environmental non-compliances IMMEDIATELY.
- Encourages rig personnel to report any unsafe work conditions or practices and any environmental non-compliances IMMEDIATELY to their supervisors.
- Ensures all required environmental compliance documents are completed by personnel, with copies distributed to Rig Manager.
- Assists in any internal audits as necessary.
- Discusses internal audit findings with Rig Manager and Tour Pusher.
- Assists Rig Manager to coordinate investigation of incidents, near-misses, and regulatory non-compliances with appropriate personnel.
- Assists Rig Manager and Tour Pusher in identifying possible corrective actions.
- Implements corrective actions.
- Discusses HSE performance reports with Rig Manager and Tour Pusher.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Ability to obtain or currently hold North Slope Training Cooperative card.
- Must have at least 5 years of rig experience with at least 2 years as a derrickman or motorman on a similar arctic drilling rig. Internal promotions are restricted to personnel with 1 year experience as a relief driller.
- Must have a current first aid card, H2S, and a United States Geologic Survey (USGS)- or Mineral Management Service (MMS)-approved Supervisors blowout prevention card. Must possess a current Well Control Certificate at the Drilling Supervisor level.
- Must be functionally literate, able to read, write, and perform basic math.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Exposed to intense arctic temperatures for short periods. Wet, oily steel floor.

The demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The employee must complete a pre-employment drug screen and physical function assessment. The work requires walking, standard, bending and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. The ability to withstand working at heights for prolonged periods of time is a requirement.
VISUAL ACUITY:
Frequently: Distance vision (clear at 20' or more), Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point), Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus). Continuously: Close vision (clear at 20" or less), Depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and special relationships).
