What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deaf Mentor Temporary position at North Dakota School for the Deaf?
Summary of Work
- This position is responsible for demonstrating and teaching natural communication and language strategies under the supervision of a highly experienced Parent Advisor.
- Teach ASL to parents and family members throughout their daily routines in family centered home visits or visits that take place in environments where the child frequents on a weekly basis.
- Share their experiences growing up as a Deaf or Hard of Hearing person WITHOUT BIAS while using positive language
- Maintain communication with parents.
- Support families in making connections within the Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing Community in order to foster positive self-identity for their child and to help family members learn about and be comfortable within the Deaf or Hard of Hearing community and with Deaf culture.
- Will include travel by State Fleet vehicle.
- The Deaf Mentor will use the SKI-HI Deaf Mentor Curriculum effectively, provided by NDSD/Resource Center, teaching parents lessons from the curriculum and helping them apply this information in the manual throughout their daily routines. The Deaf Mentor Curriculum will be the primary platform to guide services for families.
- The Deaf Mentor will complete a lesson plan for every home visit, and they will conduct and complete a report on that visit that will be submitted in a timely manner.
Minimum Qualifications
- Preferred candidates have a bachelor's degree. Previous experience in teaching language to families of children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing or previous successful experience being a Deaf Mentor.
- Willingness to be SHI-Hi trained as a Deaf Mentor.
- Must be available for Deaf Mentor training October 10-12, 2025, in Devils Lake
- Ability to support families from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultural and ethnic groups without bias.
- Maintain standards of confidentiality.
- Complete defensive driving course to drive State Fleet vehicle.
- Preference to individuals living in North Dakota.
