Job Title: Elementary Boys Basketball Coach
Reports To: Building Administrator / Athletic Director
Position Summary
The Elementary Boys Basketball Coach is responsible for guiding each participating student to achieve a high level of skill, develop discipline and sportsmanship, and build self-esteem through participation in the basketball program.
Key Responsibilities
Administrative
Collaborate with the Athletic Director on all aspects of program organization, administration, and philosophy.
Serve as a leader and positive representative of the boys basketball program.
Follow all guidelines outlined in the BNL Athletic Coaches Handbook.
Act as a positive role model on and off the court.
Provide instruction to individual athletes to develop skill proficiency and competitive excellence.
Maintain a strong knowledge of IHSAA rules, event procedures, coaching techniques, and best practices.
Foster healthy rivalries and cooperative relationships with other coaches, athletic directors, and student-athletes.
Recommend team schedules to the Athletic Director and assist in arranging facilities.
Obtain approval from the Athletic Director/Building Administrator before scheduling non-school facilities for activities.
Coordinate with staff to arrange transportation and supervision for away contests in accordance with district policies.
Supervision
Assist in the recruitment and hiring of assistant coaches.
Evaluate assistant and volunteer coaches.
Assign responsibilities and oversee the coaching staff.
Program Management & Record Keeping
Maintain accurate team and program rosters; submit updates to the Athletic Office.
Work with the Athletic Director and Booster Club to prepare an annual budget, manage financial transactions, and oversee fundraising.
Establish clear communication with parents, school staff, and local media to promote the program.
Keep detailed records of statistics, results, and program milestones.
Coordinate the presentation of awards through the Athletic Office.
Complete and submit required forms and paperwork promptly.
Athlete Conduct & Eligibility
Promote and enforce discipline, sportsmanship, and respect at all times.
Ensure a safe, inclusive environment free from bullying, hazing, or harassment.
Establish performance criteria for participation in competitions.
Verify athlete eligibility with the Athletic Office.
Uphold all rules and regulations for the sport.
Injury Prevention & Safety
Monitor and maintain safe conditions in all facilities used.
Verify that athletes have completed physical exams and insurance coverage before participation.
Enforce rules related to conditioning, health, and safety.
Report injuries to the athletic trainer and complete required documentation.
Ensure injured athletes receive proper medical care and obtain medical clearance before returning to play.
Supervise athletes until they have left the premises, and ensure all facilities are secured after use.
Team Activities
Plan and lead all practice sessions, competitions, and off-season conditioning programs.
Create a positive environment that promotes teamwork, respect, and personal growth.
Organize and oversee special events such as Parent Night, team meals, banquets, and recognition ceremonies.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
Valid teaching certificate and bachelor’s degree (preferred).
First aid and CPR certification (preferred).
Prior experience in teaching and/or coaching (preferred).
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated success in coaching or related fields.
