North Shore Nature programs is seeking individuals interested in helping us provide an experiential nature-based summer experience for our campers! Job Description:

The Lead Adventure Counselor position is a full-time (40hr/wk) seasonal position. As Lead Adventure Counselor, you will plan and lead daily activities for campers in our Navigators group (ages 12-14 years old) at a nature-based summer program. These programs emphasize exploration, group cooperation, nature study, and experiential learning. Additionally, the Navigators group involves mountain biking, canoeing, fishing, wilderness skills, and wood crafting. The Lead Adventure Counselor will work in conjunction with the Program Director, Assistant Program Director, and Assistant Adventure Counselor to provide a safe and optimal experience for all children under their supervision.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a group of up to 12 campers on daily hikes to visit forest and wetland habitats.
  • Design and implement daily age-appropriate, nature-based lessons and activities in conjunction with a team of counselors.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and emotional well-being of campers.
  • Assist in daily clean-up of the camp.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Experience mountain-biking on moderate terrain (i.e. state forest trails)
  • Ability to hike 1-2 miles every day, bike 5-7 miles per day, and have the physical capacity to participate in a variety of games and outdoor exploration activities.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, and caring personality.
  • Comfort working outside in all types of summer weather.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and independently.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Completed high school or GED; working towards a B.A. or B.S. in education or life sciences and/or equivalent work experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • A basic knowledge of local ecosystems and ability to identify common animals found in the woods and water of Massachusetts is preferred (NSNP will provide training prior to summer sessions beginning).
  • American Red Cross CPR/First Aid certification (if not currently certified, NSNP can help find a class and will pay the full cost).

Skills/Experience You Will Gain:

  • Learn effective behavior management techniques for children (and adults!)
  • Learn about local ecosystems and the plants and animals that make them home.
  • Develop interpersonal skills through collaborative work and interactions with campers and parents.
  • Learn effective and engaging activities that can be used with children in a variety of settings.
  • A commitment from NSNP to assist you in your career/schooling in any way we can during the non-summer months!

Hours:

Monday – Friday; 8am-4pm

Dates:

Training Days: June 17-21

Camp Weeks: June 24-June 28

July 1-3 (no camp on July 4 or 5)

July 8-12

July 15-19

July 22-26

July 29 – August 2

August 5-9

August 12-16

Wages:

$17-19/hr based on experience. No benefits are available.
