Job Description
Locator/Meter Technician
I. Introduction:
The objective of this position is to efficiently and accurately locate Northcentral underground facilities while also reading, documenting, and performing basic testing, maintenance, and replacement of electric meters and metering equipment.

III. Knowledge/Education Requirements:
- High School graduate or G.E.D. Certificate minimum.
- Must have a basic working knowledge of electricity.
- Must be able to learn how to use electronic facility locating equipment and document locates.
- Must have basic mechanical abilities and be able to learn how to safely access, inspect, and replace electric meters on voltages up to 240V.
- Must be able to be trained how to use PPE to access medium voltage electric apparatus, to place locating equipment probes and connectors, and work in proximity of insulated primary voltages.
- Must have a valid Driver’s License.
- Must have effective communication skills.
- Must have previous computer experience.
IV. Duties/Responsibilities:
A. Essential Functions: The following are major responsibilities of this position. They are not intended to cover each aspect of the position as the scope and duties of a given position may change or be temporarily altered based on the business needs of the Cooperative. The basic requirements of every position are to perform all tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
- Receive locate requests, via fax, phone, Korweb, or e-mail, and logs and prioritizes daily, emergency, and priority locates.
- Utilize computerized mapping system to determine approximate underground location of electric and fiber related facilities and equipment.
- Access energized equipment to locate and mark underground electric cables and facilities, by combination of measurements, physical markers, and electronic locating equipment.
- Using mobile devices and Korweb, document performed locates, using photos and electronic notes, to indicate area to be located by requestor (white lining) and located Northcentral facilities.
- When necessary for locating purposes, perform minor disconnects and reconnects of underground services in single phase, 120/240V pad mounted transformers, pedestals, and streetlights.
- Test, clean, accurately read, service, replace, and calibrate meters, instruments, transformers, and metering equipment; with supervision, as needed and in accordance with cooperative procedures.
- Access meter bases and inspect for hazards, clean connections, and read/replace problematic electric meters as requested.
- Observe and report meter tampering and any item requiring maintenance at electric service locations.
- Must be available for afterhours locates when needed.
- Observes and practices all safety policies.
B. Non-Essential Functions:
- Participates in other related activities and special projects as may be required or assigned.
V. Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 lbs. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Must be able to reach; work primarily with fingers; and feel. Must be able to talk and hear. Must be able to obtain impressions through the eyes of the shape, size, distance, motion, and color or other characteristics of objects. Must possess acuity, far and near, depth perception, field of vision, accommodation, and color vision. Must be able to speak clearly and communicate effectively in order to interact with company employees and members.
