What are the responsibilities and job description for the Charge Nurse MED/SURG - Full Time position at NORTHEASTERN HEALTH SYSTEM?
Position Summary
The charge nurse role will be one of preceptorship and leadership for the entire nursing team. They will be responsible for managing complex situations, effective communication between administration and staff, acting as intermediary between staff, physicians, other departments, and patients. They will be responsible for staff nurse accountabilities in addition to more advanced requirements as delegated by the Department Director. At times, the charge nurse will be expected to deliver direct patient care for a group of patients.
Position Accountabilities
Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Performs registered nurse duties as assigned.
Assists providers with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care.
Serves as clinical nurse role model for the nursing staff.
Organizes and assures availability of supplies for the unit.
Ensures discrepancies are resolved in a timely manner and/or before the end of the shift.
Prepares assignments for the unit/nursing staff per shift.
Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations, interdepartmental objectives, and infection control practices.
Organizes, directs, and coordinates functions and activities in assigned units.
Identifies and resolves workplace health and safety issues.
Inspects area daily for compliance with polices, procedures, regulations, and standards and takes corrective action when violations occur.
Guides, teaches and supports nursing personnel in the development and implementation of patient care plans.
Admits and discharges patients.
Coordinates patient care between nurses and physicians.
Facilitates communication between nursing staff and appropriate physician.
Resolves issues/complaints between nursing staff and/or patients as delegated by the department director.
Identifies areas of needed improvement and institutes performance activities to improve processes in coordination with department director.
Implements system and processes to improve patient care in coordination with department director.
Identifies and implements systems and processes to improve physician satisfaction in coordination with department director.
Identifies system and processes to improve nursing satisfaction and retention in coordination with department director.
Enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
Orients, instructs and trains assigned personnel as instructed by department director.
Develops, implements and administers in-service education for nursing staff in coordination with the department director.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Education - Associate Degree/Diploma
Minimum Experience - Completed initial employment period.
Required Certification/Registration - Current Oklahoma RN license and BLS certification. ACLS and PALS, NIHSS
Preferred Education - Bachelor Degree in Nursing
Preferred course(s)/training - Charge Nurse Focused CE series; Certification in Medical/Surgical Nursing
Management Experience - Supervisory experience preferred
