Sterile Processing Supervisor

Central Sterilization

 

The Sterile Processing Supervisor is responsible for unit performance, operations, staff development and supervision of staff and ensures compliance with TJC, CMS, and other regulatory requirements. The SP Supervisor, working in collaboration with the Clinical Manager of Surgery and the Nursing Director of Perioperative Services, actively drives the unit-specific plan and operations. Performs quality measures to ensure that staff are preparing and maintaining surgical instruments/supplies in accordance with Hospital policies, procedures and standards of patient care.

Responsibilities

 

  • Supervise staff in the sterilization workroom. Maintain work schedules per union contract, including On-call for weekends, daily assignments, maintain competencies and in-services.
  • Coordinate and demonstrate competence in all areas of preparation and sterilization activities, including decontamination, inspection, packaging, sterilization storage, distribution, as well as completing the quality control testing of sterilization parameters. Maintain accurate records and documentation of results.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of and adequate relevant experience in hospital-related work in sterile processing.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and documented competence in all aspects of decontamination, disassembly/reassembly, manual and mechanical cleaning methods, microbial processes, equipment operation, standard/transmission based precautions and work practice controls.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and documented competence in the operation of the specific sterilization systems led by the hospital.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and documented competence in principles of sterilization and infection disease transmission; infection control and all aspects of sterilization methods (including decontamination, inspection, and packaging of items to be sterilized, sterile procedures, equipment operation, and safety precautions).
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and documented competence on worker safety as it relates to medical device processing and sterilization.
  • Demonstrate and improve expertise through participation as a member and resource person in the infection control committee within the hospital.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and documented competence in the hazards associated with blood-born pathogens, the requirements of the OSHA standard on occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens the importance of protective measures, protective work practices, the use of PPE, emergency procedures to follow for exposure.
  • Demonstrates organizational skills, cost-consciousness and quality assurance procedures in performance of job tasks.
  • Communicates with surgical co-workers and supervisory staff as necessary to ensure effective functioning of operating room activities. Responsible for reading the Communication Book daily. Attends or designates attendance at daily huddles.
  • Complies with established Hospital and departmental policies, protocols, procedures and objectives, Quality Assessment and Improvement Program, legal, safety, environmental, infection control standards and Patient's Bill of Rights.
  • Establishes and maintains professional, cooperative interpersonal relationships with other staff members, physicians, patients, patient family members, and the public as appropriate, while assuring confidentiality of all patient information.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of organizational structure and utilizes appropriate channels of communication.
  • Demonstrates responsibility by seeking guidance and clarification when confronted with unfamiliar situations by utilizing appropriate resources and/or chain of command.
  • May act as preceptor, mentor and role model for other staff members and/or assist with departmental orientation as required.
  • Collaborates with immediate supervisor to identify professional and personal educational or training needs for effective career development. Attends and documents as necessary all required in-service training programs, continuing education courses, or other required training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

 

  • Minimum three (3) years technical operating/instrument room experience, with prior supervisory experience required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in Materials Management or Accounts Payable within a healthcare organization.
  • Above average interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Fluent English language skills (verbal and written) required. Must be committed to quality, patient care/customer service.
  • Hospital/acute care experience preferred.
  • Bachelors degree or a combination of education and/or additional job related experience may be substituted in lieu of the degree.
  • Knowledge of specialty instruments and thorough knowledge of sterilization and disinfecting parameters (steam, ETO, OPA Cidex, Steris, Sterrad) required. Familiarity with current Federal and state laws and regulations as related to specialty.
  • Certified International Association of Healthcare Central Service Management (IAHCSMM) and/or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) required.
  • LA County Fire Card required within 90 days of hire and maintained during employment.
