THE POSITION:
Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children is seeking Substitute Paraeducators
to support our preschool – eighth grade classrooms. Our Classroom staff use Signing Exact
English (S.E.E.) in our educational settings. If you don’t currently know S.E.E. but use another
form of signing and/or are willing to learn, we’d like to meet you!
Support classroom staff in all classroom activities including but not limited to: Carry out
classroom routines and transitions as directed by sub plans or classroom teachers; keep track
of assistive listening technology; facilitate educational and social interactions with peers during
class time, recess, and lunchtime; follow student behavior and organization plans; and prepare
materials.
OUR SCHOOL:

Deaf Education. Our day school serves children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH),
preschool - eighth grade and live within a 2-hour radius of our campus. Students are taught by a
Teacher of the Deaf (TOD) and students may be mainstreamed in their neighborhood school
from kindergarten and up as directed by their IEP. Students are supported in becoming self-
confident, articulate, academically competitive learners and engaged community members who
demonstrate that being deaf or hard-of-hearing is a difference, not a disability. Students wear
amplification, are provided with DM/FM systems, and use simultaneous spoken English and
S.E.E. to develop age-appropriate English and literacy skills. Class sizes are small, typically with 5
- 8 students in a homeroom grouping, served by a TOD and a Paraeducator/S.E.E. Interpreter.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Openness and desire to learn and be trained on new tasks and responsibilities
- Associates Degree or higher
- At least one year of experience in an educational setting or equivalent
- Ability to work well with colleagues, other professionals, and parents/guardians
- A passion for working with children
- Strong communication skills
- Excellent time management and commitment to punctuality
- Flexibility in service of addressing student needs and job requirements
- Ability to stay organized and multi-task while attending to detail
- Flexibility throughout the workday and ability to support multiple staff/students in
- Washington driver’s license and willingness to drive children to and from field trips
- Background check (including fingerprinting)
- Ability to lift 35 pounds
HOURLY RATE & BENEFITS: $20.00 an hour. Free parking. Full scholarships for all
S.E.E. sign classes offered through the school.
