Role Overview:
We are currently seeking a Engineer/Technologist to join our team at Novelis Global Research and Technology Center in Kennesaw, Georgia. The incumbent will be a part of the Metal Processing Group, working in collaboration with physical/process metallurgy, applied engineering, and value stream groups to develop leading-edge product and process technologies in current and emerging markets for Novelis Inc. With world-class people and state-of-the-art facilities, the center plays a leading role in developing advanced materials and innovative technologies supporting Novelis customers and manufacturing plants.
The Engineer/Technologist will be a key contributor to various research and development projects focused on advanced aluminum products for the automotive, transportation, packaging, architectural, consumer electronics and specialty markets. The role will be focused on laboratory testing and characterization of processing impacts on metallurgical and mechanical properties in support of Novelis customers and manufacturing plants. The incumbent will utilize their knowledge and experience in the operation of specialized machinery and equipment to provide technical expertise/support to both routine and non-routine processes. The incumbent will work closely with Subject Matter Experts and labs to obtain and analyze data for providing solutions to business-critical projects. The Engineer/Technologist will be responsible for the quality of assignments with moderate scope and complexity involving application of standard scientific practices, principles, theories, concepts and techniques.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Responsibilities:
- Utilize conventional and advanced analytical and metallurgical laboratory techniques to test and characterize the surface, metallurgical properties, and mechanical properties of sheet metal.
- Carry out testing in response to requests in Tribology, Topography, and Heat Treatment labs, providing high quality results in a timely fashion.
- Utilize multiple types of microscopes and software to image samples for analysis and characterization.
- Accurately prepare samples for testing and ensure samples are submitted to the relevant lab for testing in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
- Utilizes confocal microscopes and software to image samples for analysis and characterization.
- Work in collaboration with Subject Matter Experts and other lab personnel to provide business critical solutions to improve quality of customer and Novelis products, by driving root-cause analysis initiatives, interpreting data, presenting results, and making recommendations.
- Identify improvements or modifications to laboratory equipment and processes to enhance effectiveness, accuracy, and/or efficiency.
- Accurately prepare samples for testing and ensure samples are submitted to the relevant lab for testing in a timely manner with minimal supervision.
- Carry out instructions within an existing work routine, identifying & reporting delays.
- Understanding risks associated with a course of action; identifying risks to supervisor or project teams.
- Provide data that is accurate and valid, and recognize data discrepancies or unanticipated results.
- Support laboratory management initiatives related to EHS, 5S, LIMS, ISO and other quality implementation efforts.
Minimum Qualifications
- Entry to this level typically requires 3 years of relevant experience and a BS in a relevant field, i.e., Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or equivalent experience.
- 3 years hands-on laboratory experience, working as an Engineer or Researcher in a materials characterization and testing, R&D or manufacturing environment.
- Possesses general knowledge related to set up and calibration of equipment, troubleshooting, maintenance, and application/operation of equipment and processes.
- Experience in using laboratory testing and tools to evaluate metal surfaces and interacting surfaces, along with techniques such as basic chemistry, microscopy, and other surface characterization and metallographic methods considered a plus.
- Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills, ability to design testing experiments, collect, analyze and present the results proactively with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency with computers and their application to collect, store, and analyze data and images.
- Ability to balance multiple priorities across multiple projects or work streams.
- Ability to learn multiple experimental disciplines with respect to metallography, fabrication, and mechanical concepts
- Ability to independently isolate a problem and draw upon knowledge and experience to design appropriate possible solutions
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with high temperature furnaces
- Experience with tribology equipment
- Experience in designing, troubleshooting and maintenance of specialized test equipment
- Programming proficiency, i.e., Python
