SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE:
Painter applies specialized protective and aesthetic coatings, typically two-part epoxies, urethane, enamel, and primer paint to protect and finish manufactured products and parts. Key responsibilities include meticulous surface preparation (Pneumatic media blasting, cleaning, sanding, patching), skilled application using brushes, rollers, plural, airless and pneumatic sprayers, proper mixing and handling of materials, strict adherence to safety protocols, and maintaining equipment and work areas clean and organized. This role demands precision, an understanding of industrial coating, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team to ensure high-quality, long-lasting finishes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Safety & PPE: Comply with all Northwest Pipe Company WTG and HSE policies and procedures. Be familiar with SDS and PDS.
  • Surface Preparation: Cleaning, grinding, sanding, scraping, masking and media blasting prepare surfaces for epoxy, urethane, or primer application.
  • Material Mixing: Accurately mixing and proportioning two-part epoxy, urethane, and primer coatings according to manufacturer instructions and specifications.
  • Application: Applying epoxy and other industrial coatings using various tools, including brushes, rollers, and spray equipment, to achieve a consistent, quality finish that meets project specifications.
  • Equipment operation and maintenance: Set up, operate, and maintain a variety of painting equipment, including airless, conventional, and plural spray systems. Maintain all equipment and work area thoroughly clean after each use. Complete routine preventative maintenance to equipment as necessary.
  • Quality Control: Inspect finished surfaces for defects like runs, drips, or insufficient mil thickness, and perform necessary touch-ups to meet quality standards. Complete and maintain all required paperwork as necessary.
  • Teamwork and Coordination: The ability to work effectively as part of a crew and follow instructions from a Lead or Supervisor. Communicating with supervisors, inspectors, and team members to understand project requirements and timelines. Participate in all inventories, safety meetings and ISO audits.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist in other tasks in the department, such as capping, stulling and rounding up pipe.
  • Maintain housekeeping within all production, storage and waste areas.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the lead or department supervisor.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • One-year-related experience and/or training/or equivalent combination of education and experience in painting.
PAINTER I – this level of Painter is responsible for performing quality paint application and requires little or minimum experience. Individuals in this position operate, work with and around various large machinery and chemicals, so ample care and adherence to safety training is necessary. Duties are routinely carried out under close supervision; however, supervision is not always available for routine and repetitive tasks, which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. As work experience is gained, the employee may be assigned to tasks that are more difficult in nature and require more responsibility.

PAINTER II – this level of Painter is responsible for performing duties described for a Painter I. This level of Painter requires additional training, skills and experience. Work normally is performed under limited to close supervision. As additional experience is gained, the employee may be assigned to tasks that are more difficult in nature and require more responsibility. Employees in this position may be responsible for providing on-the-job training to new employees. Employee must know and understand Product safety sheets/Safety product sheet.

PAINTER III – this level of Painter is responsible for performing duties described for a Painter II. This level of Painter possesses advanced qualifications and experience. Work normally is performed under minimal supervision. Employees in this position will be responsible for providing on-the-job training to new employees. Employees in this position may be responsible for providing on-the-job training to new employees. Employee must know and understand Product safety sheets/Safety product sheet.
