The Special Education Teacher in Training, under the direct supervision of the Certified Special Education Teacher and Director of Education, assists in developing, implementing and monitoring students’ educational programming. This role assists in developing functional academic, vocational, social, and students ADL skills coupled with managing all aspects of the classroom and homebound program including supervision of staff as a means of enhancing student independence and quality of life in keeping with Oak Hill mission.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in special education or closely related field, working towards a Special Education Master’s degree and Special Education certification.
  • Some teaching experience and/or closely related field experience.
  • Understanding of Connecticut’s Common Core of Teaching and instruction in all subject areas inclusive of occupational/life skills
  • Content knowledge of various disabilities and the impact of disabilities on classroom performance
  • Implementation of strategies to facilitate student learning & behavior management

Responsibilities

  • Becomes familiar with information about students, to ensure that programs which are developed and implemented meet their needs and provide consistency in program implementation.
  • In conjunction with the PPT, and under direct supervision of Special Education Teacher, assists in developing an Individualized Educational Plan for each student, based on formal and informal assessment of student needs,
  • Assists Special Education Teacher with completing student assessments and ecological inventories with goals in support of the interdisciplinary team process objectives.
  • promotes developmentally appropriate standards of behavior that support a productive learning environment for all students.
  • maximizes instructional time by effectively managing routines and transitions.
  • develops and implements instructional plans for goals and objectives on each student’s IEP as well as other appropriate educational, medical, behavioral, and recreational activities aligned with Oak Hill School philosophies and educational model.
  • implements instructional content for learning (academic, ADL, behavior, and therapeutic programs developed by the Trans-Disciplinary Team).
  • Assists Special Education Teacher with writing and submitting quarterly progress reports and participating in quarterly meetings with parents as needed.
  • Assists Special Education Teacher in submitting data from restrictive behavior programs to the Behavior Specialist for monthly program review, to facilitate assessment and evaluation.
