General Summary

Are you passionate about creating inclusive recreation opportunities that support health, wellness, and community connection? As a Recreation Program Coordinator, you will support the development, delivery, and evaluation of recreational programs for all ages and abilities. This role works closely with Parks and Recreation staff, volunteers, and community members to ensure programs are engaging, well-organized, and aligned with Oakland County’s core values.

Annual Salary: $52,685 - $70,588

This position is onsite.

Minimum Qualifications

What You’ll Do:

  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of recreational programs and activities.
  • Support recreational programs and special events serving park visitors, targeted populations, volunteers, and community groups.
  • Plan and present workshops and mini-classes at Oakland County Parks, facilities, and events throughout the County.
  • Maintain accurate program records and utilize County systems to support program operations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functions as a leader over students, volunteers, and part-time employees. Assists, instructs, and assigns work.

Essential Job Functions

Researches, designs, develops, and implements recreational programs that support the mission of Oakland County Parks and Recreation.

Works with representatives from local communities to develop special events and provide excellent customer service to the general public.

Trains, assigns work, and assists provides leadership to part-time staff and volunteers during programs and/or special events at park facilities and various locations throughout Oakland County.

Enforces safety regulations for recreational equipment and facilities at special events attended by park patrons and the general public.

Responds to inquiries from the public, in person or by phone or mail, regarding the use of the park and facilities.

Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of recreational programs, activities, special events, field rentals, daytime activities, health and fitness, community collaborations, and obtaining business sponsorships.

Develops and adheres to budgets for programs and special events.

Works with office staff on billing and scheduling events for programs and special events.

Works with Communications and Marketing staff to develop promotional and marketing materials to advertise programs available.

May independently respond to customer service concerns as they arise to provide customers with a safe and enjoyable experience.

May assist with tracking inventory for program supplies, uniforms, or other items, purchasing or ordering inventory replacements, and making recommendations to the budget process.

Utilizes current Countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments

Additional Duties & Responsibilities

May prepare reports of weekly, monthly and end of season activities as needed.

May provide support for existing partnerships and sponsorships that support recreational programs and events.

May provide input for grant applications or assist with tracking and reporting on grant funded programs.

Essential Mental & Physical Requirements

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

Ability to provide written and oral instruction to others.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a normal office environment and in an outdoor environment with exposure to heat, cold and other weather elements.

May participate in duties that require driving or being a passenger in a motor vehicle.

Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Must be able to lift, push, or pull up to thirty (30) pounds.

Experience, Training, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • a. Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Parks & Recreation or closely related field. OR
  • Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with any major; AND
  • Have one (1) year of full time Parks & Recreation experience.

NOTE: Applicants possessing transcripts from a college or university outside of the United States will be required to provide documentation of degree equivalency from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (http://naces.org/members.html). The degree evaluation will be required for application processing.

Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Out of country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’s license before the hire date.

NOTE: Under federal law, those who operate certain vehicles are required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). When assigned to Mobile Recreation program, persons in this classification may need to possess such licensure.

Pass the complete examination, including the employment medical, established for this classification.

  • ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable ability to establish favorable working relationships with others.

Considerable ability to communicate effectively with higher level administrative staff, business partners, sponsors and representatives of other local governments or community agencies.

Reasonable knowledge of community resources in the recreational field.

Reasonable ability to instruct, assign, and assist recreation staff and volunteers at recreation programs and special events.

Reasonable knowledge of cash management practices, point of sale functions, and customer service.

Reasonable ability to communicate effectively with representatives and residents in local communities concerning recreation activities, programs, and customer services issues for a variety of stewardship, therapeutic, volunteer, special event, or other recreation program.

Considerable ability to work under pressure in urgent or emergency situations.

Reasonable ability to maintain personal cleanliness and a presentable public appearance.

Reasonable knowledge of first aid and safety practices.

Familiar with current word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and Internet software.

Familiarity with Oakland County Parks and Recreation Commission Rules and Regulations for park properties.
