What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Nurse position at Oakland Elementary School?
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To provide health services and leadership in establishing a complete and effective program of school health. Responsible for daily medical care in a school setting, administration of medication, medical treatments and teach Family Life classes. School staff training of CPR. This person would also be responsible for student screenings.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Current RN licensure to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia is preferred.
2. Current CPR and First Aid certification.
3. Two years previous nursing experience.
REPORTS TO: The school nurse will be under the direct supervision of the school Principal. Coordination of the job description and duties will be managed by the Divsion Head Nurse.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To supervise the implementation of the medication policy by assuring that physician's orders and parental permissions are signed and that medication is properly administered and stored.
- To participate with school staff in developing and implementing the total school health program.
- To assess and evaluate the health and developemental status of students through nursing assessments with the use of appropriate evaluation techniques.
- To provide nursing intervention for acute and chronic illness and injury, including appropriate documentation and development of health care plans.
- To provide consultation and referral to students, parents, and/or primary medical care providers for evaluation and follow up as necessary and to make home visits as needed.
- To assess kindergarten and new student immunization, physical exam, and other health records and to notify appropriate persons when these are not in compliance with Code of Virginia requirements.
- To support, with nursing knowledge and skills, school attendance for children who must use medication or other skilled nursing care in the treatment of illness or chronic health problems that might be a barrier to the students ability to learn if such care were not available in the school setting.
- To implement standards of emergency care that minimize the effects of accidents and illness in school, according to the protocols in the First Aid Guide for School Emergencies from VDOE and VDH, or according to the students' individual health care plan.
9. To serve as a child advocate and to assist with Special Education evaluations, IEP meetings, and 504 Plans as needed.
10. To perform and complete follow-up for vision, hearing and scoliosis screening programs and other programs as necessary according to state and local guidelines.
11. To provide health related inservice for staff and students as necessary, to include OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Training to all employees in the building and training for staff in medication and Insulin/Glucagon administration according to the Code of Virginia.
12. To maintain student health records according to documentation standards in the Carroll County Public Schools health manual and the records retention guidelines in the Carroll County Public Schools policy manual.
13. To monitor for the presence of communicable diseases in the school, and to report and respond according to appropriate local and VDH guidelines.
14. To complete required reports in a timely manner.
15. To attend staff and other required meetings.
16. To provide Family Life Education (sensitive areas) for students according to the adopted curriculum.
17. To provide outreach and enrollment assistance for eligible students for Medicaid and FAMIS programs.
18. To peform other duties as may be assigned by the Division Head Nurse.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This is a 185 day/6 hours per day, 10 month contract position. The salary will be determined by the Carroll County School Board.
EVALUATION:
Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
Salary : $38,151 - $45,921
