What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pretrial Educator position at Office of Statewide Pretrial Services?

The Office of Statewide Pretrial Services’ (OSPS or Office) is a statewide office that provides pretrial services under the Pretrial Services Act, 725 ILCS 185. The Office’s mission is to assist in the administration of justice and promote community safety by ensuring fairness and equality in the pretrial process. OSPS prepares pretrial investigation reports for the courts and supervises individuals released from custody as directed by the court.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: The Pretrial Educator delivers training for the Office of Statewide Pretrial Services (OSPS) to OSPS staff, attorneys, law enforcement officials, judges, and other government officials. The Pretrial Educator will work under the general supervision of the Policy Development Chief as part of the Division of Performance Management.

FUNCTIONS INCLUDE:

· Delivers internal trainings to OSPS managers, supervisors, investigators, and pretrial service officers on topics including, but not limited to, OSPS policy and procedures, pretrial assessment completion, pretrial investigation completion, writing skills, communication skills, and legal and evidence-based practices in pretrial services.

· Delivers trainings to external stakeholders who play a key role in the delivery of pretrial services, such as public defenders, state’s attorneys, judges, administrative court staff, and law enforcement officials.

· Prepares training presentations, manuals, handouts, and study materials for each training session.

· Travels throughout Illinois to deliver assigned trainings.

· Assists the Pretrial Training Manager in developing training topics, plans, and courses.

· Serves as subject matter expert on pretrial services and on training methods, developments, and best practices.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience in social science, public administration, criminal justice, or a related field.

2. One or more years of experience as a facilitator conducting training or education.

3. Effective oral and written communication, presentation, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.

4. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products (i.e., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).

5. A valid Illinois driver’s license and demonstrate proof of automobile insurance to operate a personal vehicle on state business, as well as maintain a safe driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree in criminal justice, public administration, education, or closely related field.

Two or more years of experience training in the field of criminal justice, community corrections, pretrial services, probation, parole, public or business administration, education or other similar setting.

Knowledge of the criminal justice system including related Illinois statutes, regulations, procedures and operations at the trial court level, and a comprehensive perspective of legal and evidence-based pretrial services including pragmatic applicability and implementation.

Five or more years’ experience working in community corrections or justice system in Illinois.

Ability to positively and professionally interact with co-workers.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the ability to sit for extended periods of time. This is a professional office working environment, requiring telephone usage and the ability to process written documents. Applicant must have the ability to travel and possess a valid Illinois driver's license and demonstrate proof of automobile insurance to operate a personal vehicle on state business, as well as maintain a safe driving record. Occasional overnight travel is required.
