Description

Effectively communicate with interdisciplinary team and others.

  1. Identifies self by name and nursing unit when answering phone.
  2. Answers call lights immediately and addresses patient in a caring tone.
  3. Channels messages and/or patient request to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
  4. Listens attentively and requests clarification and/or feedback as indicated.
  5. Gives clear and concise messages.
  6. Immediately gives attention to patient or visitor who presents to the nursing station.
  7. Assures notification of other departments when a patient is discharged or transferred (may be via computer system).
  8. Assures physician/provider has been notified upon admission.

Perform clerical responsibilities as required

  1. Keeps charts in proper order – always checks for medical orders before being filed. Reports filed in appropriate chart.
  2. Transcribes medical orders according to policy and procedure, with verification by nurse.
  3. Assists medical and nursing staff with chart location, clerical duties.
  4. Documentation in medical record is accurate and timely.
  5. Assures necessary “forms” and supplies are available in medical record and on unit. Orders and stocks necessary equipment and supplies.
  6. Maintains supply of “new charts” ready for new admits.
  7. Completes the 24 hour census report.
  8. Errands as assigned by the Charge Nurse/House Supervisor.
  9. Assists with phone calls for staffing needs.

Maintains safe and therapeutic environment for patient care and co workers

  1. Takes necessary safety precautions when transporting patients of all ages.
  2. Reports any faulty equipment, infection or safety hazards to the Charge Nurse/House Supervisor.
  3. All occurrences are reported immediately to the nurse in charge and event reports are completed with assistance from the charge nurse/house supervisor before the shift ends.
  4. Knows and responds accurately to all emergency code situations.
  5. Remains calm and follows directions.
  6. Knows and uses proper body mechanics.
  7. Reports to assigned area during disaster drill or disaster and carries out assigned functions in a timely manner.
  8. Keeps nursing station neat and clean and assists other nursing personnel in reducing clutter in hallways.
  9. Adheres to blood and body fluid precautions. Knows where to locate personal protective equipment and uses appropriately. Aware and uses appropriately segregated waste
  10. Accountable for ensuring patient safety during the course of performing his/her duties.
  11. Pain management

Upholds nursing policies, procedures and code of ethics

  1. Code of Ethics and Standards of Nursing Practice are continually met.
  2. Performs all assignments accurately and timely, and according to nursing policy and procedure.
  3. Continuously aware of cost containment by prudent use of supplies and equipment.
  4. Recognizes and supports the Patients Bill of Rights maintains confidentiality in all hospital matters. Adheres to legal compliance policies.
  5. Actions are consistent with the OCH Purpose, Vision, and values.
  6. Employee Health, Infection Control, Exposure Control Plan policies followed.
  7. Upholds and follows personnel policies.
  8. Aware of and use of HealthcareValues line

Professional Self Development and Human Relations

  1. Attends in-services that pertain to assigned area of practice. These in-services shall include fire, safety, mass disaster, infection control, (Exposure Control Plan, HIV, TB, and other infectious diseases update). Must complete annual mandatory in-services.
  2. Aware of OCHu and training videos
  3. Accepts supervision. Seeks guidance as needed and accepts supervisory feedback non-defensively. Accepts decisions and implements without antagonism.
  4. Participates in Performance Improvement.
  5. Attends 80% of staff meetings per year.
  6. Promotes harmonious working relationship within the hospital. Willingly helps team members. Is alert to the needs of other team members and seeks ways to help when own work is completed.

  9. Shows evidence of prompt and thorough response in handling assignments by the nurse.
  10. Adheres to lines of authority and uses proper channels for communications.
  11. Organizes work well and makes good use of time.
  12. Forwards and patient concern to the Charge Nurse/House Supervisor.
  13. Dress and grooming reflect pride in self and hospital.
  14. Cooperates in lending assistance to other nursing units or hospital departments when the need arises.
  15. Courteous, friendly, and helpful to personnel that are temporarily coming to regularly assigned area and also to new personnel or students. Explains work accurately and clearly.
  16. Demonstrates reliability and dependability in attendance and punctuality.

  1. Absent 1-5 occurrences – meets requirements
  2. Absent 6 or more occurrences – needs improvement, does not meet requirement

Cooperates with staffing needs; assists with covering open shifts when needed.

  1. Supports organizational accountability and demonstrates such through work.
  2. May be requested to be member of QI team.
  3. Frequently accesses email to stay up to date on information within the organization and provides a way of communication between staff members.

Performs all procedures in accordance to established policies and procedures of OCH and adheres to legal compliance policies and other regulatory issues

Qualifications


High School Diploma or equivalent; ability to follow written and verbal instructions effectively; knowledge of basic medical terminology; basic keyboarding and computer skills; customer service oriented; communication skills a must; ability to stay focused and calm under stressful conditions; organizational skills a must; attention to details. BLS Provider or equivalent knowledge or obtains within six months of employment.
