STATUS: Classified – Non-Exempt, Part Time
HOURS OF WORK: 30 Hours a week. The position hours are flexible but will require some after-school hours presentations or focus groups.
STARTING HOURLY: $25.00
POSITION SUMMARY: Recognizing that opioid misuse has become a public health danger that threatens the health and wellbeing of students, their families, and staff, the Olathe Public School District (OPS) is seeking to hire an Opioid and Substance Use Instructor . The goal of the incumbent will be to develop and implement a new “Opioid and Substance Use Education and Prevention Program” for use throughout the school district to help educate students, families and staff about the risks and dangers of opioids, the science of addiction, and how to stay safe and drug-free. This position reports to the Director of Health Services.
PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement an evidence-based opioid and substance use education and prevention program that highlights the dangers of opioid use and aims to prevent opioid misuse and addiction among students. The program will help students, parents, and staff recognize the warning signs of opioid and substance use, understand the effects of opioids on the body and brain, and the science of how opioids cause dependence and addiction.
- Engage and seek input from students, parents, and staff regarding their current knowledge of opioid use, and what they see as crucial elements of the Opioid and Substance Use Education and Prevention Program.
- Identify risk factors that increase student vulnerability to engaging in opioid use and develop strategies to mitigate risk factors which can be taught to students, families, and staff.
- Identify and promote protective factors that prevent or delay the onset of substance use, especially factors that promote student and family engagement.
- Provide tangible resources to facilitate learning which may include in-person training events, videos, webinars/seminars, and/or infographics. Resources will be developed and provided to students, families, and staff.
- Evaluate and expand the district’s current opioid response and naloxone training so that more staff are trained in how to respond to an opioid poisoning or overdose.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Current physical/TB test.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to generate presentations and written documentation.
- Driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- The incumbent employee will have or will obtain a minimum of 8 hours of training on opioid and substance use disorders through accredited continuing education sources, virtual education platforms, or professional societies. Preference will be given to a candidate with previous experience in developing curriculum for student learners and teaching in a school district (e.g., teacher or paraeducator), and/or with a school-based support background (e.g., registered

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires the performance of Medium work. The position involves Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The position is in a normal office setting with exposure to computers, with interruptions and irregularities in the work schedule. The work is sedentary, although a frequent amount of reaching, walking, and standing is necessary, an occasional amount of lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, and some stooping, kneeling and/or crouching as well as a significant amount of fine finger dexterity is required in carrying out the essential duties of this position. The position is performed in generally hazard free environment and a clean atmosphere.
