Essential Responsibilities
- Ensure timely preparation, filing, and payment of property taxes, indirect taxes (sales and use, GST, PST), regulatory returns, and business licenses required for all entities
- Conduct state-specific research, as needed, and conduct indirect tax planning to pay the correct amount of tax under the law
- Conduct nexus studies to determine in which tax jurisdictions various entities must register and file returns; register as needed to begin compliance
- Implement existing, new, or changing tax laws in systems and procedures for accurate billing or self-assessment of indirect taxes
- Critically review property tax assessments and negotiate appropriate valuations with state and local assessors
- Develop and maintain filing calendar for tracking returns and payments
- Ensure accurate documentation is maintained and stored logically to support audits
- Defend the company under tax audits with accurate data, legal research, and negotiation
- Prepare and maintain job aids to streamline tax decision-making and audit defense
- Identify tax risk areas and work with other functional areas to ensure appropriate steps are taken to minimize tax risk
- Perform or review reconciliations of tax accounts
- Prepare and provide tax exemption certificates to vendors, as needed
- Identify areas of continuous improvement to work more efficiently and effectively
- Review new projects, lines of business, acquisitions, or entity sales for indirect tax and property tax impact and perform due diligence
- Provide annual accrual/budgeting updates for indirect tax expenses, as requested
- Develop and implement process improvements and internal controls in the filing and payment of indirect taxes
- Work with outside service providers on refunds and other special projects, as needed
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned
- Prepare training materials and train tax staff
- Supervise indirect and property tax staff or third-party partners and review the returns and reconciliations they prepare
- Delegate other projects and tasks, as needed
- Encourage professional development and continuing education of tax staff
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
- 6 years indirect and property tax experience
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Business and finance acumen
- Strong working knowledge of tax and GAAP principles for indirect and property tax
- Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with both internal and external business partners and governmental entities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; effectively converse with all levels of the company, business associates, and governmental entities
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite

- 6 years’ related experience
- Previous experience in Rail Transportation, Supply Chain Logistics, Manufacturing, Real Estate, or other regulated industries
- Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
- NetSuite experience, or other large ERP software
- Research skills in Bloomberg or other standard packages
- CPA
- Work in a climate-controlled office and routinely use standard office equipment
- Estimated Starting Annual Salary: $129,902
- Exact starting salary is determined by merit; seniority; geographic location; education, training, and/or experience related to job duties and responsibilities
- FLSA Status: Exempt, Not Eligible for Overtime
