Performs difficult professional work supervising social workers in the Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services, and Permanency Planning (adoption/foster care) units of the Department of Social Services, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the general direction of the Social Work Program Manager. Continuous supervision is exercised over Social Workers.

- Provide supervision of social workers addressing serious and complicated cases which require the flexible use of a wide range of social work skills and intervention techniques in the Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services or Permanency Planning unit of the Department of Social Services.
- Assign cases to subordinates, coordinate work flow operations, supervise staff through case review and consultation which requires the provision of substantial and recurring technical direction.
- Conduct on-the-job training for staff and arrange formal training when necessary or dictated by programmatic changes.
- Resolve problems and ensure quality social work services are provided by subordinate staff.
- Provide input to higher level management on administrative, personnel, and budget issues.
- Review program objectives and service delivery needs with staff; formulate specific goals and objectives for assigned program areas; provide input to higher-level management on short-range planning needs for staff or unit.
- Facilitate changes in work procedures to meet program demands and present recommendations related to issues with impact programmatic goals, objectives, and policies.
- Monitor the work of subordinate staff through case reviews, progress reports, conferences and information discussions to assure compliance with operational standards and established policies.
- Assist in the recruitment, orientation, and performance evaluation of social workers.
- Evaluate staff performance and make recommendations regarding personnel action; counsel staff regarding performance and employee personnel policies.
- Perform assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
- Perform related work as required.
