JOB TITLE: Shelter Manager DEPARTMENT: Program

REPORTS TO: Program Director STATUS: FT Exempt

SUMMARY OF POSITION: In collaboration with Executive Director (ED) and the Program Director (PD) develop, oversee, and grow all elements of Open Door Mission’s Shelter Services, remaining centered in relationship with God through Jesus Christ and consistent with an environment of grace, truth, and hope. Shelter Services shall be developed and operated with a 3-prong approach to include: Life/job skills, Recovery, and Discipleship. Ensure the highest quality, attainment of program goals, and alignment with ODM mission statement, philosophy of ministry, and values. Directly supervise Program Staff including participation in hiring and firing, discipline, scheduling, and evaluation. Train and educate ODM staff, at the request of the Executive Director in recovery and other programmatic areas, facilitating support of program participants and guests. Counsel shelter and program clients consistent with Biblical principles in support of a grace and truth environment. Prepare all reports related to programs, collecting relevant data and ensuring its accuracy. Address and resolve program-related concerns, including client disciplinary action.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and train the Support Specialist (CSS) team, and direct care volunteers through monthly one-on-ones, team meetings, ad-hoc opportunities. Provide support, encouragement and accountability for services provided to ODM program participants and guests
  • Responsible for hiring, training, evaluating, disciplining, and dismissing departmental staff, according to ODM policies and procedures. Review timesheets bi-weekly.
  • Responsible for Front Line Staff Scheduling. Work with the PD to cover any gaps in scheduling that occur.
  • Exercise a ministry of presence on the ODM campus and in the community, engage guests in relationship with a safe and comforting presence.
  • Supervise, develop, monitor, and maintain shelter structure as well as intake and discharge policies and procedures to assist individuals who need shelter, collaborating with the Program Director and Executive Director in facilitating program outcomes and goals.
  • Directly oversee daily operations of ODM Shelter Services, including the writing, adaptation, and implementation of policy/procedures.
  • Responsible for overall cleanliness and order of program participant rooms and shelter storage.
  • As a member of the Guests Care Committee address program participant and guest discipline as necessary, building plans and steps for a redemptive process whenever possible. Review and approve program participant/guest goals. Evaluate effectiveness of goals with the GCC and update accordingly.
  • Facilitate opportunities for staff and volunteers to receive appropriate on-going education, training, and development to remain informed, viable, and cutting edge. Conduct ODM staff training related to program and/or recovery as requested.
  • Maintain current and complete case notes and records for each guest. Ensure excellence in record-keeping and data entry. Generate reports and present information to leadership or other parties.

  • Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, conflict resolution and debriefing in situations of conflict, stress, and trauma.
  • Complete weekly and monthly checklists and submit by deadline a compilation of monthly reports.
  • Responsible for building culture, in collaboration with the PD, on the FLS team by modeling and coaching our Core Values, Mission, Vision and Code of Conduct.
  • Communicate efficiently and properly with other departments. Communicate with the PD and ED about operational needs, staffing, and program participant issues.
  • Maintain accurate files and records on employees and areas of responsibility.
  • Support security in all areas.
  • Complete/participate in other projects, tasks, meetings, etc., as requested by the PD and ED.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has a genuine personal relationship with Jesus Christ that bears evidence of an active, maturing faith and is a good Christian role model.
  • Desires to share God’s love and truth with all those we come in contact with and minister to at ODM, ie: guests, staff, volunteers, Board Members, partners, etc.
  • Possesses strong leadership qualities as well as organizational and communication skills (interpersonal, written and verbal), and experience and pays attention to details.
  • Exhibits ability to mentor, disciple and advise people lacking social skills who also have addictions, and emotional and mental illness.
  • Is aware of resources within our community, benefitting to ODM clientele, able to build collaborative working relationships accordingly.
  • Is in agreement with and supports ODM’s purpose, philosophy of ministry, statement of faith, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates a strong work ethic and willingness to lead and participate in necessary activities.
  • Is flexible and has good conflict resolution skills and is able to be a constructive member of ODM staff team.
  • Is willing to forego personal rights for the common good of ODM and help in other areas as needed. Has a servant attitude, ie. Phil. 2:5-8
  • Is comfortable with public speaking and teaching in front of large groups as well as facilitate small group discussions and can relate well to the public.
  • Exhibits creativity in planning, programming and leading activities and people.
  • Is spiritually and emotionally mature exhibiting sound judgement, good decision making abilities, and able to stay calm and think clearly in emergency situations.
  • Possesses sound computer and office skills to complete administrative tasks.
  • Able and willing to de-escalate people or situations, both verbally and physically
  • Previous training in handling addiction, mental illness, lay-counseling, etc.
  • Bi-lingual desired
  • Current certification (or willingness to obtain) in CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens Management and AED use.
  • Valid NY state driver’s license, record acceptable to ODM insurance.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL FACTORS: (INCLUDE PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS SUCH AS BENDING, LIFTING, CLIMBING STAIRS, MANUAL DEXTERITY/COORDINATION, FINGERING, STANDING FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME, ETC. NOTE IF WORK IS OUTDOORS)

  • Work will involve interactions with a diverse client/guest population and involves working with people who struggle with homelessness, mental illness, addiction, may be under the influence of alcohol, and/or have poor personal hygiene. - Continuously
  • Work is primarily indoors and will require climbing stairs on a daily basis.
  • Requires the ability to think, create, develop, speak and hear - continuously.
  • Lift and move up to 50lbs, occasionally

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-3 years of previous leadership/supervision experience working within homeless/mental health/addiction field
  • 3 years working directly with individuals who have had homeless, mental illness, and/or addiction related issues
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Human Services, Biblical Studies or a related field required, Master’s Degree in Social Work, Mental Health, Counseling, Management, Divinity, Theology or a related field preferred
  • Ordination and Certification in drug/alcohol counseling preferred

Pay: $20.00 - $22.00 per hour
