What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineering Technician position at OpTech?
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Technician to support engineering teams in the modification, testing, fabrication, and repair of mechanical equipment and machinery. This role is highly hands-on and involves working closely with engineers, designers, and shop personnel to build, test, and improve mechanical systems and components.
The ideal candidate has strong experience in blueprint interpretation, equipment testing, fabrication coordination, and troubleshooting, with the ability to translate engineering designs into real-world, functional solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Support engineers in the design, modification, assembly, and testing of mechanical equipment and components
- Prepare sketches, redline drawings, work orders, and purchase requests for internal teams and external vendors
- Review engineering drawings and blueprints for accuracy, clarity, and manufacturability
- Coordinate with machine shops, sheet metal shops, fabrication vendors, and drafting teams
- Set up and conduct functional and performance testing of assemblies and components under operational conditions
- Analyze test results and recommend design or process improvements
- Modify or adjust equipment to ensure compliance with design specifications and performance standards
- Inspect drawings and return errors or discrepancies for correction
- Perform dimensional checks using measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.)
- Assist with prototype builds, redesign efforts, and continuous improvement initiatives
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and specifications
- Hands-on experience with mechanical assembly, testing, and troubleshooting
- Ability to create basic sketches and engineering drawings
- Experience working with fabrication and manufacturing processes
- Proficient with measurement tools and inspection techniques
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative, shop/lab environment
- Basic leadership or mentoring experience is a plus
Software & Tools (Preferred)
- Experience with CAD tools such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo, or Inventor
- Proficient in MS Excel and other basic computer applications
- Familiarity with test documentation and reporting
Education & Experience
- Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or related field (required)
- 5–7 years of hands-on mechanical technician experience in manufacturing, testing, or engineering support environments
Nice to Have
- Experience in automotive, industrial machinery, aerospace, or manufacturing industries
- Prototype or R&D testing experience
- Exposure to vendor coordination and external fabrication.
