What are the responsibilities and job description for the Security Officer position at Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)?
Security Officers are responsible for the safety and well-being of employees, volunteers, and visitors. In their role, security officers will respond to various types of emergencies such as first aid, lockdowns, missing persons, fire alarms, and more. They also play an integral role in the guest experience and contribute by ensuring parking lot signage is in place, responding to customer questions, and ensuring the property is ready for opening.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Under the direction and guidance of the Safety, Health, and Security Manager, provides safety to the employees, volunteers, and visitors of the museum;
- Provides exceptional and equitable customer service to the public and staff;
- Patrols the OMSI Waterfront Ave Campus, and acts as a deterrent to theft and vandalism;
- Lockdowns and arms exterior buildings daily;
- Assists with OMSI event support, such as OMSI After Dark programming, Community Science Nights, and Gala;
- Completes incident, theft, and vandalism reports and submits them to the Health, Safety, and Security Manager daily;
- Upholds high integrity by adhering to confidentiality, protocol, and community agreements;
- Provides first aid to staff, volunteers, and visitors;
- Ensures proper exterior signage is in place prior to opening and throughout their shift;
- Responds to and de-escalates aggressive individuals in alignment with protocol and organizational values.
Working Conditions
- This position is non-exempt, paid hourly;

This position is regular full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week;
- Requires working onsite at the museum location;
- Position shifts depend on business needs and may require working late evenings, weekends, and holidays. Some shifts may be unsupervised.

Physical demands include: 80% standing, 10% sitting, 10% lifting/carrying/pushing:
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged hours for security activities, such as patrolling.

Secondary Job Responsibilities
Secondary responsibilities include-but are not limited to-the following:
- Assists and/or coordinates efforts in finding lost children/parents in the museum;
- Works with local jurisdictions to report graffiti, encampments, biohazards, and large trash cleanups;
- Keeps up to date on building fire alarm response, safety procedures, and evacuation protocol;
- Perform support tasks for the facilities department, as needed.

- Ability to positively engage with the houseless community, and identify and share relevant resources and support systems;
- Developed understanding of confidentiality and protocol, and adaptable to OMSI-specific community agreements.
PREFERENCES:
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in a non-English priority language in Oregon.
Education & Work Experience
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 1 year of customer service experience;
- Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds.
PREFERENCES:
- Experience working in public settings, with a security/safety focus.

Current DPSST Unarmed Security Professional Certification Card:
- If not licensed, training can be provided at no cost for selected candidates as part of the onboarding process;
