Description

Under the direction of the Sheriff, performs marine law enforcement work on and around local waterways; insuring the protection of citizens of and visitors to Otsego County.


Examples of Duties

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties, which the employees may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.


  • Conduct watercraft safety equipment inspections.
2. Issue warnings and/or citations for watercraft violations.
3. Investigate all watercraft accidents.
4. Maintain all marine equipment.
5. Assist the Underwater Dive Team in recovery of bodies.
6. Attend all meetings, when requested, to inform the general public on Marine Laws.
7. Assist in training of students for their Boating Safety Safety Certificate.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

Requirements include the following:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of two (2) years of college coursework in criminal justice is preferred.

  • Previous police experience that would provide the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the responsibilities listed above. M.C.O.L.E.S. Basic Training and M.C.O.L.E.S. certified or certifiable preferred.
  • The county, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Michigan operator or chauffeur license.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid required following employment.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or crime that might question credibility as a Peace Officer.
  • Must successfully complete the employment-screening process, which may include written, oral, psychological and physical screening, along with complete background investigations.
  • Must be mentally and emotionally stable, suited for police duties.
  • Must be in good health, adequate to perform police duties, free from chronic disease, free from any physical deformities.
  • Must pass a physical examination by a medical or osteopathic physician.
  • Height and weight must be in proportion.
  • Must have at least 20-50 vision in each eye, corrected to 20-20, and be free from color blindness.
  • Must have normal hearing.
  • Must pass extensive background investigation.

Ability to operate vehicles to patrol County waterways.

Walk over uneven terrain to conduct investigations and subdue and apprehend suspects.

Ability to withstand long periods of standing and walking.

Ability to bend, stoop, and kneel in order to search for contraband and perform other functions.

Ability to enter and retrieve information from a computer.

Working Conditions:

Work outside in varying weather conditions.

Exposure to injury and unsanitary or unhygienic materials, individuals and/or situations in the course of performing required duties.


Otsego County does not offer a benefits package to employees classified as part time irregular.
