Position: Overnight Shelter Attendant
General Description:
Responsible for providing emergency shelter while managing basic needs and services to individuals experiencing homelessness.
Classification: Hourly, Non-Exempt
Hours: 12 midnight to 10am Tuesday-Friday (occasional weekends)
Job Description:
- Assist residents staying in the shelter overnight
- Monitor the activity of residents on an assigned shift ensuring safety, security and compliance to shelter rules
- Maintains accurate and complete records and logs containing pertinent information
- Ensures that facility is maintained in a neat and proper order
- Communicates with supervisor and designated staff regarding guest issues
- Maintain confidentiality of all communication regarding guests, agency and staff
- Manages shelter operations to include enforcing shelter rules, policies and procedures, ensuring a calm, supportive atmosphere, and maintaining the security of the shelter
- Housekeeping including laundry, sweeping, mopping, dishwashing, wiping down surfaces, and cleaning restrooms
- Orients, assists and manages volunteers as needed
- Restocking supplies as needed
- Organizing, sorting and recording inventory
- Daily reporting and administrative tasks
- Other duties as assigned
Education/Experience:
- High School diploma or G.E.D.
- One year prior experience performing customer service duties, or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
Qualifications:
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Confident communication skills both written and verbal
- Flexibility & ability to troubleshoot
- Relationship manager with comfort in working with diverse populations (volunteers, staff, board members, community members, etc.)
- Detail-oriented and organized
- Ability to work both independently and as a member of a larger staff team
- Ability to de-escalate difficult situations
- Ability to connect with diverse types of organizations: schools, businesses, government, faith organizations, etc.
- Patient, compassionate, & professional
- Must have flexible schedule, nights and holidays
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged standing, walking
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
