Job Summary

Provides plant production control and drives a transit mixer truck equipped with auxiliary concrete mixer to deliver concrete mix and other related construction products to job sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This is a small plant that requires diverse skills based on the business environment which will require the employee to assist in various areas of the plant-repair/maintenance in the plant area, driving concrete truck, plant product operations, yard clean-up, and overall running the plant.

Ensures safe and efficient operation of the plant through maintenance, inspection and repair of the equipment and operating conditions of the plant.

Assure a Lockout/Tagout program/policy for Ready Mixed is developed and implemented while assuring personnel follow safe lockout/tagout procedures.

Check moisture content of aggregates and assure that all batches of concrete are mixed to meet job specifications. Operates plant based on production schedules to assure appropriate sequence of operations. Operates computerized control panel to weigh and batch the concrete mix ingredients.

Assists in performing preventative maintenance on equipment.

Keep plant facilities clean and safe for efficient operation. Will operate a fire hose to clean the plant, operate water valves, and control electrical switches in the plant.

Daily perform a pre and post-trip safety check on equipment and the truck to assure a safe vehicle. Document any maintenance that may be required. Maintain log sheet to meet D.O.T. criteria, if required.

Backs truck under loading hopper, starts mixer to receive concrete. Follows established guidelines for truck loading.

Drives truck to designated job site for unloading. Must distinguish between safe and unsafe conditions at the job site, in traffic and throughout plant areas.

After delivery, wash chutes into the washout bucket recovery system and return to plant reclaim area for leftover concrete disposal. Use washout pit system for mixer rinse to prevent concrete from hardening in mixer and on truck.

Sprays surfaces of truck with protective compound to prevent adhering of concrete as needed.

Assure MSDS forms are maintained and up to date for accurate information and immediate review.

Perform minor maintenance to the assigned vehicle-tire pressure, lube ring on mixer drum and check all fluid levels (water, fuel and oil).

Education and/or Experience

  • Requires a vocational/technical mechanic diploma; or three to six months related mechanic experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities - This job directs and oversees the work of others assigned to the plant—drivers or yard material handlers.
  • Must have proven mechanical troubleshooting skills.
  • Must have a valid Commercial Drivers License (Class B minimum).
  • Must have a good driving record to be able to meet the company s insurability requirements.
  • Must be able to operate with minimal supervision, be a trouble shooter and take initiative to investigate and resolve problems.
  • Must be a self-starter. Must be able to work well with others.
  • Previous commercial truck driving experience is preferred.
  • Must meet the Department of Transportation (DOT) physical requirements and carry a physical exam card, which is to be kept current according to DOT guidelines.
  • Must be flexible regarding work assignments and demonstrate willingness to perform other support duties during non-busy times.
  • Must be able to work with various hand tools of the trade.
  • Must have good manual dexterity and good motor coordination skills.
  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule during busy season and be able to work late or irregular hours.
  • Previous knowledge of construction and construction products is helpful.
  • Must understand and maintain the internal and external customer service responsibilities of the position.

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms.

Would regularly climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; able to talk, hear, and smell.

Must be able to use up to 35 pounds of force occasionally.

The employee is occasionally required to sit.

Direct frontal reaching is required while the employee may be required to lift 25 pounds over the head occasionally.

As a driver, the employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds to shoulder height.

Must be able to lift, place and set warehouse products as required during load preparation, loading and unloading.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Employees are required to wear protective safety gear and eye protection.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, confined spaces and possible extreme heat.

The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; 25% outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration.

The employee will also climb stairs to access the plant.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Employees are required to wear protective ear protection.

There are some chemical exposures that are part of performing the job.

MSDS sheets are available in the department.

Plant and field environment with exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases and chemicals.

Based on scheduling and business volume the employee will be required to be flexible on work assignments which would be in the plant, driving or assisting where needed.

This is a non-smoking/vaping campus.

Candidate is required to meet the above qualifications, task frequency and PPE requirements. Approval of pre-employment reference & background checks, and post offer drug/alcohol testing with back screens (if required) are conditions of employment.
