What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) position at Palolo Chinese Home?

Primary Purpose: Along with the Director of Nursing (DON), manages the operations and staff of the Nursing Department. Develops and conducts training programs and work assessments for all new and current employees. Oversees the nursing Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement.

Essential Duties/Functions:

New Hire Orientation and Onboarding:

· Conducts new hire training with all new nursing personnel. Covers areas including, but not limited to Point Click Care (PCC), Incident Reports (IRs), Care Plans, grievances, etc.

· Meets with new hire regularly until proficient in meeting required competencies.

· Ensures new hires complete the new hire competency checklist prior to the completion of their new hire training.

· May serve as a floor preceptor for new hires

· Coach and mentor new staff and follows up with individual and group learning needs as directed by the DON/Administrator. i.e. IVs, Fluid Intake, Medication Administration.

· Completion, validation and reporting of incident report, investigation, follow-up. Infection Control Investigation and Report. Blood glucose control checks and QA requirements.

Education and Training:

· Oversees and supervises the development and delivery of in-service education to equip nursing staff with sufficient knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, quality care and respect for resident rights.

· Evaluates staff educational needs and sets routine in-service schedule. Coordinates in-services with educational presenters when necessary

· Assures staff is trained in fire and disaster and other emergency procedures, and evaluates performance during drills.

Quality Assurance:

· Demonstrates knowledge of and application of key Quality Measures and proactively monitors and implements systems to achieve and/or surpass state and federal thresholds.

· Monitors facility incidents, complaints and grievances daily to identify those defined as unusual occurrences by State policy and promptly reports such occurrences to DON/Administrator.

· Monitors complaint/grievances reports daily for allegations of potential abuse or neglect, or the loss or misappropriation of resident property, and participates in these investigations.

· Oversees the nursing Quality Improvement Projects.

· Timely submits QA reports on topics assigned by Administrator/DON.

Monthly Audits:

· Follow through with weekly Nursing Special Duties, i.e. Med/TX Cart, refrigerators.

· Works with Charge Nurses to ensure required audits (i.e. environmental audits) are completed and identified problems are fixed

Abaqis

· Ensure quarterly Abaqis Stage 1 Resident Interviews and Resident Observations are complete. Ensure quarterly Abaqis Stage 2 flagged areas are completed within 1 month.

· May serve as a leader on assigned QAPI projects

Human Resources Related Duties:

· Provides support and guidance to team members of the assigned departments, coordinating schedules, duties, tasks, and workloads.

· Participates in the facility's personnel process when necessary. This may include but is not limited to interviewing/hiring, disciplinary action, terminating employment, and grievance hearings

· Creates and implements Performance Improvement Plans for staff when needed. Provides follow up until performance goal is achieved.

· Completes employee evaluations, as required. Evaluates the work performance of assigned personnel and implements education, training, coaching and discipline according to PCH policies.

· Promotes teamwork, mutual respect, and effective communication with nursing staff.

Absence of the Director of Nursing

· Acts in an administrative capacity in the absence of the Director of Nursing/Administrator.

Other Responsibilities

· Knowledgeable of all practices and policies concerning confidentiality of information.

· Works on the nursing unit in the event of a staffing shortage.

· Is a member of PCH’s management team with responsibility for general oversight of the organization for:

· efficient use of resources,

· staff fulfillment of their duties and responsibilities,

· staff follow proper work safety standards,

· regulatory compliance,

· quality resident care.

· Maintains current physical examination and TB clearance per regulation.

· Attends any mandatory training and In-Services.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Work Area: Well-lighted, well ventilated work unit.

Equipment: Ability to utilize standard equipment such as, but not limited to, bed, bedside stands, scales, Arjo-century lifts, infectious waste receptacles, 12 lead EKG, etc.

Work Hours: This position is an exempt position. Work schedule is generally Monday – Fridays, 8am – 4:30pm. May be asked to work other than above shifts as resident care and staff training requires. Will take call on a rotational base

Mental Demands: Requires providing professional level of services. Also requires a sincere dire to work with the aged and those with limited capacity for self-care. Subject to frequent interruptions. Exposed to infections, odors and peculiarities in the behavior of aged residents.

Physical Demands: Requires intermittent walking, standing and sitting during the work day. May require pushing and pulling beds, wheelchairs, recliner in excess of approximately 200 pounds with assistance. May require lifting, carrying, repositioning and transferring residents who may weigh in excess of 200 pounds with an Arjo-Century lift.

Communication Demands: Requires communicating with all levels of staff, residents and visitors during the shift. Requires proper documentation of care given.

Qualification Requirements:

Skills/knowledge:

· Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills required.

· Must have previous experience in medical setting and familiarity with long term care and social service procedures.

· Is able to handle residents based on whatever functional level they are currently at.

· Possess leadership abilities, patience, tact and a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm.

· Must be proficient with MS office products, such as Word, and Excel.

· Demonstrates autonomy, organization, assertiveness, flexibility and cooperation in performing job responsibilities.

· Must be able to read and write English to facilitate proper communication with others.

Education/Training: Must have a Bachelor’s of Science in nursing from an accredited College or University and must have a Hawaii State RN license, First Aid and CPR certification.

Experience: Must have at least 3 years’ experience as a licensed nurse in a LTC setting. Previous supervisory/management experience preferred. Must have training and experience in rehabilitative, geriatric or long-term care nursing concepts.

Staff must wear medical grade masks. Masks provided to staff for free. Staff/visitors screened for temperature and exposure risk before every shift. New & current employees must be fully vaccinated. Relig/Med exception may be requested - not guaranteed.
