Under the direction of the Fire Marshal, this FLSA non-exempt, entry-level position conducts inspections assigned to the Fire Prevention Bureau; assists with various fire prevention and life safety educational programs and advises on fire and life safety in buildings, subdivisions and processes; assists with fire investigations. Performs a variety of administrative and technical work related to fire inspection and prevention.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs entry-level technical duties.
- Examines fire protection system shop construction drawings and specifications for new buildings or contemplated repairs of existing buildings for conformance to fire and building codes
- Inspects existing buildings or new buildings during construction to ensure that stairways, means of egress, fire and life safety systems and completed buildings comply with fire and life safety regulations.
- Performs routine fire and life safety inspections and life safety system inspections to insure compliance to fire code.
- Maintains a variety of data and records regarding fire inspection or prevention activities; prepares reports regarding fire inspection or prevention as required.
Peripheral Duties
- Assists with public addresses and education on fire prevention; demonstrates fire hazards and fire prevention methods and procedures; trains business employees in the use of fire extinguishers.
- Assist in the investigation of fire incidents.
- Instructs classes in assigned subject areas.
- Assists in training new employees as assigned
- Assists in other department administrative activities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must obtain ICC Fire Inspector I within three (3) months of appointment to position.
- Must obtain Utah Fire and Rescue Academy Fire Inspector I Certification within twelve (12) months of appointment to position.
- No felony conviction or disqualifying criminal histories within the past seven years.
- Must be a citizen of the United States at the time of hire or provide proof of appropriate work permit.
- Must be able to read and write the English language.
Desired Qualification
- Public education experience.
- Experience with building construction, construction materials and the ability to read and understand building construction plans.
- Previous inspection experience, firefighter experience or equivalent education.
- Working knowledge of fire codes and ordinances
- Working knowledge of fire investigation methods and procedures
- Skilled in the operation of the tools and equipment listed.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Must have the ability to effectively apply standard fire prevention techniques.
- Must have the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
- Must have general knowledge of building construction, construction materials and the ability to read and understand building construction plans.
- Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
