GROUP EXERCISE INSTRUCTOR
Position: Non-exempt, part-time per assigned scheduled classes. A minimum of one regular class per week must be maintained.
Direct Supervisor: Group Exercise Director
Job Summary: Provide high quality group exercise classes according to the class description, industry standards, and certification standards. The format and delivery of all classes must focus on the success of the members and be safe, fun, and effective. All instructors are representatives of Parkpoint and must, therefore, demonstrate Parkpoint’s Mission (see above) and Core Values of Excellence, Respect, Integrity, Teamwork and Community and Health and Well Being at all times.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Class Responsibilities:
- Design and instruct assigned classes in a safe, fun, and effective manner in accordance with industry and applicable certification standards as well as class guidelines as set by the Group Exercise Director. Class content must be updated regularly and presented using current industry information.
- Be dependable and prompt. Subbing out classes must be kept to a minimum and approved by the Group Exercise Director per the Shift Coverage Procedures.
- Address the components of fitness (specifically cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition) efficiently and effectively as applicable to the class.
- Present yourself professionally at all times. Act as an educator, coach and motivator for your students. Use clear communication and cueing skills.
- Give group corrections as well as individual corrections in a positive, informative and supportive fashion.
- Welcome new students to class and establish a rapport with all students that is positive and caring. Work to integrate new students into class, the group exercise program and the club as a whole.
- Pay attention to individual instruction and help teach students proper body alignment, form and aerobic awareness. Set the example by demonstrating excellent technical execution of all exercises.
- Provide a non-competitive social atmosphere and reinforce the motivational aspect of group classes.
- Provide a variety of regularly changing class music that is appropriate for the class in style, tempo (beats per minute) and language.
- Provide exercise routines, format designs and instruction that are appropriate for the class level. Offer modifications for all levels of fitness by demonstrating the safest and most moderate level first.
Club Responsibilities:
- Professional appearance and behavior including appropriate dress and shoe attire for class, professional language and nonverbal communications.
- Operate all exercise and sound equipment, facility lighting and AC responsibly and appropriately.
- Demonstrate proper care of all exercise and facility equipment. Instruct students in the proper care and use of all equipment and supplies.
- Be a representative of the Parkpoint Club in all class and member interactions. Promoting and/or advertising outside programs, whether business or personal, is strictly prohibited.
Team Responsibilities:
- Act as a liaison between members and managers regarding club operations and policies – inform members of club operations as requested and support management decisions. Problem-solve pro-actively in a win-win manner with members to reach solutions. Follow up on all member concerns, suggestions, problems and issues by informing management of any difficulties.
- Professional attitude and behavior towards members and staff. Be friendly, helpful and outgoing. Create an atmosphere that is warm, caring and enjoyable.
- Attend all group exercise staff meetings and Club all staff meetings as required.
- Be a team player and participate in the club and staff activities.
- Be a positive support to fellow instructors and their classes. Create and ensure a non-competitive team environment.
Job Qualifications/Requirements/Certifications:
Must have reliable transportation to work.
- Hold a current certification with a nationally recognized exercise association or a certification in a specific discipline that meets industry standards. For specialty classes such as Pilates, yoga, NIA, kickboxing, cycling, Qigong, etc. appropriate training and current certifications are required.
- Maintain certification through attendance in certified continuing education workshops and seminars.
- Complete the California Anti-Harassment Training with 90 days of hire.
- CPR /AED previous certification at hire or within 90 days of hire. Recertification not required.
- Have teaching experience in group exercise or related field. Possess strong leadership skills. Demonstrate expertise in cueing, vocal quality and correctional techniques.
- Be knowledgeable in proper body mechanics, paying special attention to body alignment, spine and joints.
- Be physically able to perform all exercises necessary to instruct classes effectively using proper form and alignment.
- Excellent communication skills: English speaking, writing and reading required
