What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police & Public Safety Trainer position at Parkview Health?

Summary
 

The Police & Public Safety Trainers, in conjunction with the Captain/Supervisor Training/Spillman/Accreditation is responsible for coordinating all training and education for police and public safety personnel and In-service trainings in order to maintain compliance with state mandates for required training hours and other training needs of the department.

1. Provides monthly summary of training activity to the Captain/Supervisor Training/SA.

2. Works closely with the Captain/Supervisor Training/SA regarding Use of Force to identify gaps in policies and trainings to ensure our officers are trained in best practices.

3. Continues to build relationships with local law enforcement trainers.

4. Reviews and assesses current training effectiveness and designs benchmarks for future training effectiveness, making recommendations to the Captain/Supervisor Training/SA based on current trends and best practices in law enforcement, public safety and communications.

5. Coordinates, develops, facilitates, tracks, records, approves, and reports all trainings conducted by police and public safety personnel on behalf of Parkview Health within the department, the health system, and the community at large.

6. Coordinates and conducts the Essentials of Aggression Management training across the health system for Parkview co-workers.

7.Coordinates Spillman training.

8.Dispatch training on all aspects of the job duties including APCO certifications.

9.Other trainings and education as needed.


 

Education

High school diploma/GED required. Associate's degree or greater preferred.

Licensure/Certification

Valid Driver's License required by all trainers with no or minimal infractions. Certification as a trainer in the Non-Violent Crisis Prevention program being used by Parkview Health is required within ninety (90) days of employment.

 

For those tasked with training police officers in the state mandated courses, the following is required: Certified law enforcement officer through the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Training Board; Certified Law Enforcement Primary Instructor through the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board within 6 months of accepting the position; Certified in 1 (Preferred 2) of the 3 Psychomotor Skills of instruction through the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board, i.e. Defensive Tactics, Emergency Vehicle Operations, and/or Firearms within 6 months of accepting the position.

 

For those tasked with training and educating in non-mandated courses, or training non-sworn public safety officers or dispatchers, the following is required: Certification and/or appropriate experience in the topic being instructed, i.e. Spillman, APCO (Communications), Essentials of Aggression Management, etc. as determined by the Captain/Supervisor Training/SA.

 

Experience

Minimum 5 years law enforcement experience required for all police trainers, and 5 years experience in communications or public safety for non-sworn trainers.

 

Other Qualifications

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to lift, push/pull up to 70 lbs. Demonstrates ability to multi-task and work independently using critical thinking skills. Must be able to work flexible hours and on-call as assigned and must be willing to travel to all Parkview Health Facilities as needed.
