SUMMARY:  Provide prescribed medical treatments and personal care to students with complex disabilities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Able to work with students with multiple medical needs.
  • Able to work with a large variety of students with disabilities.
  • Able to follow individualized student care plan.
  • Able to suction tracheostomy, oral and nasal.
  • Observes students to detect health needs.
  • Administers medication and treatment prescribed by physicians.
  • Follows daily medication and treatment schedule left by RN.
  • Assembles and uses such equipment as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen supplies.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations that may arise.
  • Responds to calls about injuries and illnesses.
  • Administers first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
  • Able to problem solve and work with student's medical equipment.
  • Understands seizures and use of Diastat/emergency medications.
  • Understands anaphylaxis and use of Epi pens.
  • Contacts parent/doctor if need arises.
  • Chart medical treatments completed.
  • Cleans equipment used.
  • Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.
  • Assists RN in providing care to students.

 

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

License from the State to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse. CPR and AED Certified.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions staff or students.

 

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Mobility to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally sit, walk or stand.  The employee will occasionally reach forward or above the head, bend and twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person.  Employee must have the ability to visit various buildings in the district.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move and push up to 90 pounds such as students and students in wheelchairs.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee is frequently exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person. The employee is responsible for the safety, well-being of students.
