What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shop Tech position at Patterson-UTI?

The Shop Technician 2 will operate in the local re-manufacture and service facility at an intermediary level performing in a wide variety of situations producing a wide range of products.  Duties include increasingly complex assembly of equipment including top drives, iron roughnecks, frac/mud pumps, electric/hydraulic systems, and related oilfield equipment. This position will work under the direction of the Shop Supervisor.

The Shop Technician 2 will operate in the local re-manufacture and service facility at an intermediary level performing in a wide variety of situations producing a wide range of products.  Duties include increasingly complex assembly of equipment including top drives, iron roughnecks, frac/mud pumps, electric/hydraulic systems, and related oilfield equipment. This position will work under the direction of the Shop Supervisor.

Detailed Description:

  • Assemble increasingly complex equipment/products with limited supervision according to standard operating procedures.
  • Read, interpret and follow standard engineering drawings, specifications, bill of materials and other verbal/written work instructions/procedures to accurately assemble equipment and products.
  • Identify product defects and complete appropriate documentation when required.
  • Read and interpret assembly drawings, parts lists, operation sequence sheets and visual aids.
  • Set up and operate a variety of machinery, tooling and test equipment; perform any rework from test failures in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Verify quality of product produced in accordance with manufacturing work instructions.  
  • Complete and document all work via a product traveler.
  • Liaise with supervisor regarding quality or procedure problems.
  • Rework and/or repair assembled standard equipment and products according to engineering specification changes.
  • May have previous exposure of product lines manufactured or serviced by Warrior.
  • Perform all work in accordance with quality standards and established safety procedures.
  • Skilled in final inspections, safety and materials handling.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment; provides aid to senior shop technicians when required.

Job Requirements:

  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to read and follow mechanical assembly drawings
  • Read electrical and hydraulic schematics
  • Able to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair oilfield equipment to include top drives
  • Excellent Verbal and Written Communication skills
  • Utilize a computer and software for communication, reporting and data acquisition
  • Able to follow safety policies or procedures
  • Lift and carry 50 pounds independently while walking on uneven surfaces
  • Able to occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, twist, and crawl
  • Frequent use a variety of hand and power tools to perform a range of mechanically oriented functions including independent use of heavy-duty handheld and long-handled tools
  • Clear vision to judge near and far distances to maintain awareness of, watch, and report ongoing work activities to coworkers and third parties
  • Listen for unusual noises that signify equipment and machinery problems
  • Maintain spatial orientation and awareness to safely move around work environment with many moving objects
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all designated times

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Three years of related experience with fundamental knowledge in either mechanical, hydraulic or electrical disciplines.
  • Must reside or be willing to self relocate to approximately within 100 miles of the shop.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated mechanical/hydraulic/electrical assembly in the oilfield services/drilling industry. 
  • Technical certification in automotive, lift truck, heavy equipment and/or diesel engine repair.

Additional Details:

The Shop Tech must work with an emphasis on safety for themselves and others including coworkers and third parties. The typical work environment will be in the shop or field which will require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, working near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.
