What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veterinary Technician position at Paws Humane Society?

Qualifications/Skills: Applicants must have a good attitude, strong customer service skills, a strong work ethic, strong patient care skills, a love for animals, and be detail oriented. Must possess the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and handle a full range of motion including stooping, bending and reaching. Must be a minimum of 18 years old.

Functional Responsibilities:

Technical duties –

  • Prepares animals for surgery; induces and monitors anesthesia
  • Assists veterinarians with surgery and necropsies
  • Performs routine clinical laboratory tests
  • Assists wellness service when necessary
  • Renders emergency treatment in life-threatening situations to sustain life
  • Performs follow-up treatment as prescribed by a veterinarian
  • Treats animals humanely, with compassion and concern both on and off the job and transmit these values to others

Administrative duties –

· Establish and/or maintain medical logs for controlled drugs

· Inform practice manager of any discrepancies in medical logs

· Complete surgical paperwork and prepare drugs for surgery patients

· Effectively and efficiently communicate information to practice manager, medical team, and individuals within the medical team as needed

· Meet with supervisor regularly to discuss progress of training and target areas that need improvement, to evaluate scheduling and fine-tune as needed, to discuss any problem areas concerning patient care, employee issues, cleanliness, etc., to evaluate the need for and the implementation of new programs such as vaccine clinics, spay/neuter specials, etc

· Effectively teach new skills to current and new technicians/assistants as required. Conduct or assist in conducting continuing education for clinic staff

Operational duties –

· Ensure that routine equipment maintenance is being performed on a timely basis

· Oversee sanitation processes and ensure that protocol is being followed

· Monitors supplies for spay/neuter service and notifies PM when supplies are needed

· Unpack supply orders and record all pertinent information on invoice

Customer service –

  • Provides responsive, high quality service to employees, representatives of outside agencies and members of the public by personally responding to service requests or appropriate referral, and providing accurate and complete information, in a courteous, efficient and timely manner
  • Maintains the highest level of customer service

Skills and abilities:

  • Identify normal and abnormal animal behavior and symptoms of rabies and other animal disorders
  • Care, feed, and safely handle animals to avoid injury to persons/animals.
  • Properly store and maintain inventory of medical supplies, including Schedule II narcotics
  • Function calmly in situations that require a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy
  • Effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Communicate effectively with a variety of individuals representing diverse cultures and backgrounds and function calmly in situations, which require a high degree of sensitivity, tact and diplomacy
  • Provide prompt, efficient and responsive service
  • Exercise appropriate judgment in answering questions and releasing information; analyze and project consequences of decisions and/or recommendations

Education and/or Experience:

One (1) year of experience in an animal clinic, hospital and/or public animal control agency is highly desirable.

Education, training, and/or experience that demonstrate possession of the skills and abilities listed above.

Working Conditions:

· Indoor kennel environment.

· Work with and around animals and animal fur, dander and waste.

· Will be responsible for dealing with animals outside in all weather conditions.

· Occasional exposure to high stress levels.

· Work off shift (holidays, weekends) and fluctuating hours as needed.

· Exposure to high noise levels and zoonotic diseases when in kennels.

· Exposure to cleaning and other chemical materials requiring OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets.

· Potentially may have contact with hostile persons and/or vicious animals.

· Exposure to wet floors/slippery conditions.
