Responsibilities
Reporting to Risk Management Counsel in North American Headquarters in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, activities include:
- Providing strategy and direction for pursuit of insurance coverage and recovery where applicable, and retaining and managing external coverage counsel.
- Working with the Risk Management Team on policy placements and recoveries for operations that span US building, civil and industrial construction projects.
- Working together with the Legal Group to monitor external legal counsel on insurance claims.
- Monitoring the Workers Compensation program and claims handling.
- Providing internal coverage opinion regarding all insurance policies applicable to PCL (including corporate master program policies, owner-controlled, and project specific policies) on all applicable losses.
- Assisting with specific Errors & Omissions and Employment Practices Liability cases with insurers for all claims within these programs.
- Ensuring consistent approach to PCL’s insurance claims handling throughout the company, in keeping with best practices and manages third party adjuster relationship and in particular the overall strategy of the “boots on the ground” for liability claims.
- Monitoring first party claims activity and, where applicable, elevating issues appropriately with insurers.
- Coordinating and conducting claims review meetings with all districts and providing direction for best practices.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years experience with insurance related legal practice.
- A post-secondary degree in Law.
- Strong leadership skills and results orientated.
- Strong technical acumen in insurance.
- Excellent analytic, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to cope under pressure in a fast paced environment.
- Self-directed, results-oriented, able to work under extremely tight deadlines.
- Ability to plan, organize and maintain attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) with an emphasis on presentation, negotiation, and ability to influence others.
- Ability to understand broad and complex business issues.
- Strong project management skills.
- Dynamic, proactive and decisive personality who adapts well to and initiates change.
- Knowledge of construction means and methods, problem identification, and project scheduling an asset.
- Experience working with and interpreting financial statements and asset.
- Ability to network with internal and external alliances including underwriters, brokers, internal stakeholders, clients and lenders.
- Willingness to travel throughout Canada and the United States.
The salary range for this position is between $128,000 and $176,000 per annum, based on experience and qualifications.
